The North Carolina Department of Transportation is hoping public input will help guide efforts to ease congestion along I-40 in Wake and Johnston counties.
The NCDOT held an input session Tuesday evening on a project to widen I-40 from the Beltline in southeast Raleigh to NC 42 in Johnston County.
Officials said that stretch of highway gets congested, especially around rush hour.
"I think it's a high-priority project," said project manager Robert Deaton. "We've gotten a lot of interest already in phone calls and e-mails."
Deaton said funding still has to be secured, and the project is at least ten years away from being complete.
He said an environmental assessment is due out in fall 2011, and will reveal more details about the project, which could add one or two lanes in both directions.

Great news from the Triangle Business Journal!!
The Tar Heel State is one of the most attractive in the nation, according to a new poll.
North Carolina tied with Arizona and Washington as the sixth most popular states in the nation when it comes to where people want to live, according to a Harris Interactive poll.
"The most popular states and cities where large numbers of people would like to live tend to attract tourists and business," according to a Harris news release. "They are places where people like to take vacations and where companies like to have their offices and factories."
Coastal states tend to dominate the list. California ranked No. 1 for the sixth year in a row as the place Americans would like to live. Florida came in second and Hawaii, third.
Despite North Carolina's popularity, no cities within the state made the list of cities people would most like to live in or near. Among cities, New York City took the top spot in the poll, followed by Denver and San Francisco.
The other most popular states were: Texas (No. 4), Colorado (No. 5), Tennessee (No. 9), Oregon (No. 10), New York (No. 11), South Carolina and Massachusetts (both No. 12), Georgia (No. 14), and Montana (No. 15).
The other cities in the top 15 are in order San Diego, Seattle, Chicago, Boston, Las Vegas, Washington, D.C., Dallas, Nashville, Atlanta, Orlando, and Los Angeles.
The poll of 2,498 U.S. adults was conducted Aug. 10-18.

Johnston County Schools Will Not Eliminate Any Jobs

Johnston County Schools will not have to cut any employee positions this year, even with an estimated $4.6 million in budget cuts from the state. The budget adopted last week by the NC General Assembly includes a discretionary cut of approximately $4.6 million for Johnston County Schools, which translate into a reduction of funding for non-instructional support, technology, and Central Office administration. Local school officials said these discretionary cuts could have resulted in a reduction of 133 staff members. However, administrators and the school board planned for cuts early in the budgeting process this year, and all cuts have been absorbed through normal attrition, including retirements and resignations. Fortunately, Johnston County school leaders say there will be no reduction in employment of school staff members this budget year.
