Hiring a painter in Salt Lake City, UT.

These are a few things that you should consider when Hiring a painter in Salt Lake City, UT.

1) Is your painter Licensed? According to UT law, construction contractors in the state of Utah must have an applicable Contractor's license to do business. To obtain a contractor's license you must do the following:

  • You must pass an in depth written exam specific to your trade.
  • You must have a satisfactory personal credit rating.
  • You must pass a background check.
  • You must have 2-4 years minimum experience in the industry you are obtaining a license for.
  • You must maintain General Liability Insurance.
  • You must pay dues to the residence lien recovery fund, Which can protect your home if your painter does not pay their obligations.

These requirements protect the consumer in many ways. Did you know that if an employee of your contractor gets hurt on your project and your painter is uninsured you could be held liable? Also be sure to check that your painter has the proper license. There are other licenses called "Handyman Licenses" that have strict limitations and don't require the items listed above to obtain. Pretty much anybody can get them. Some contractors will say they are licensed but only have a handyman license. Ask to see a license or visit https://secure.utah.gov/llv/llv to verify.

2) Is your painter adequitely insured? The state minimum for contractor general liability insurance is $100,000. If your home burns down because someone forgot to unmask a light who is going to make up the difference? The answer is most likely you.

3) Does your painterhave a long list of referals? It is always a good idea to ask for referrals. Your Painter in Salt Lake City, UT should be able to provide at least 5 with no problems.

4) What brand and grade of paint is your painter using? Interior paint ranges in price from around $9.00 to over $60.00 per gallon. There may not be a noticeable difference until you wash your walls and the paint comes off. By then your painter will most likely be long gone. Be sure to ask your painter what brand and product name they plan to use and research the products yourself.
