Sun Lakes Arizona Things to Do This Weekend

Award-winning Native American flute maker and two-time Native American Music Awards nominee Alex Maldonado will perform at Chandler's Indian Art Market being held this Friday, Saturday and Sunday in downtown Chandler.

Alex will be performing with flutes, drums and rattles on Friday night from 6 to 8 p.m. with his son, Nick Maldonado. In addition to entertainment, the free festival will feature Native American art from artists all over the Southwest. Event hours are:

Friday, October 7 - 3 to 9 p.m.

Saturday, October 8 - 9 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Sunday, October 9 -Noon to 4 p.m.

Authentic art will include jewelry, photography, pottery, paintings, Katsina carvings, sculptures, baskets, weavings, clothing, and tribal arts and crafts. The Arizona Fry Bread Company will be offering traditional Native American favorites and local bands and Indian dance groups will perform throughout the day.

The beauty and essence of native culture will be shared through song and story by Ken Duncan Sr., a member of the San Carlos Apache Tribe, whose use of humor and music helps convey the unique heritage and spirit of the American Indian.

There also will be performances by Moontee Sinquah, a champion hoop dancer from the Village of Shungopavi in northern Arizona, whose energetic dance using various hoop designs conveys a story of the elements of life.

Contestants in the 2011 Miss Indian Arizona contest will perform Saturday at noon prior to their evening competition at the Chandler Center for the Arts for the title of Miss Indian Arizona. For more information, visit www.chandleraz.gov .

You've probably heard this news prior, but in case you have not, Allegiant announced new, nonstop jet service between Mesa, Ariz., and Las Vegas, Nev., will begin Nov. 17, 2011. The company, known for its exceptional travel deals, will introduce the new service to East Valley residents with fares as low as $29.99*one way.

These new flights will operate six times weekly between Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport (IWA) and McCarran International Airport (LAS), with service Monday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday.

On Mondays, flights will depart Mesa at 1:25 p.m. arriving in Las Vegas at 1:35 p.m. Flights leaving Las Vegas will depart at 2:15 p.m. arriving in Mesa at 4:25 p.m.

On Thursdays, flights will depart Mesa at 2:00 p.m. arriving in Las Vegas at 2:10 p.m. Flights leaving Las Vegas will depart at 2:50 p.m. arriving in Mesa at 5:00 p.m.

On Fridays and Sundays, there will be two flights. The first flight will depart Mesa at 2:50 p.m. arriving in Las Vegas at 3:00 p.m. Flights leaving Las Vegas will depart at 3:40 p.m. arriving in Mesa at 5:50 p.m. The second flight will depart Mesa at 6:30 p.m. arriving in Las Vegas at 6:40 p.m.

Flights leaving Las Vegas will depart at 7:20 p.m. arriving in Mesa at 9:30 p.m. (all flight times are local). The carrier will utilize a full-size, 150-seat MD-80 jet aircraft on the route.

In an effort to keep you informed about news affecting Sun Lakes, I recently posted information in an Intel expansion blog. Seems that good things come in bunches, as there has been an announcement that CyrusOne, a subsidiary of Cincinatti Bell, will construct a new data center in Chandler in the Continuum Office Park.

This facility is eventually to be around 1 million square feet in size - the largest of its kind in the region. It will have 110 megawatts of power capacity from self contained substation generators. The data center will be 90% servers to handle data for CyrusOne clients. CyrusOne has 18 such facilities in the United States and London.

Phoenix / Chandler Continuum - Phoenix, Arizona

CyrusOne, a wholly owned subsidiary of Cincinnati Bell (NYSE: CBB) and preeminent enterprise data center colocation solutions provider, has purchased a 40-acre parcel of land to build a 1-million-square-foot data center in Chandler, Ariz., near Phoenix. Upon completion, the data center is expected to become the largest of its kind in the country with 110 megawatts of power capacity, delivered from a substation to be built on the property. The CyrusOne data center is going to be well suited for Fortune 500 companies on the West Coast that require robust data center infrastructure for mission-critical applications and want to locate it in an area that is generally considered one of the safest in the country—free from natural disasters including seismic activity, tornados, and hurricanes.

“The CyrusOne Phoenix data center will be a marquee facility and one of the most advanced data centers in the industry, featuring energy-efficient technology, cutting-edge design, and enterprise-class standards—all designed to exceed our customers’ needs both now and in the future,” said Gary Wojtaszek, president of CyrusOne. “CyrusOne will continue to focus on delivering an exceptional customer experience, as we look to expand our West Coast customer base.”

Beginning construction in 2012, CyrusOne is the first company to locate in Continuum, a 152-acre master-planned science and technology business park located in the Price Corridor in Chandler.

Although the facility will not employ many new workers, it will create markets for other jobs in the service industry through clients visiting the facility.
