Downtown Phoenix Museums, Theaters and Sports Venues-

Heard Museum
With exhibitions of cultural objects and fine art to jewelry and fashion, the Heard Museum offers the best in traditional and contemporary American Indian art. Year after year, the Heard continues to build upon its commitment to exhibit the finest works from its permanent collection as well as top-notch traveling exhibits and the best in emerging contemporary art from the museum’s permanent collection and beyond. All combine to make our exhibitions part of a living institution that embraces diversity.

Orpheum Theatre
After 12 years, $14 million and an incredible amount of perseverance, the historic Orpheum Theatre has been renovated for "adaptive reuse," restoring as much of its visible splendor as possible, while retrofitting it as a modern theatre capable of handling anything Broadway sends its way. And its marquee at Second Avenue and Adams Street again announces the names of first class productions, drawing thousands of people to a vibrant downtown venue.

Herberger Theater Center
The Herberger Theater Center was conceived as a pivotal piece in the redevelopment and revitalization of downtown Phoenix. Built in 1989 to support and foster the growth of performing arts in Phoenix as a performance venue and arts incubator, the Herberger Theater Center has contributed to the cultural and educational development of the Valley. Each year, approximately 175,000 patrons, including 30,000 school-aged children share the unique experience of live performing arts.

Phoenix Art Museum
Phoenix Art Museum has become a popular Valley oasis, a retreat from the desert and the traditional outdoor activities. The Museum is always 72° with 50% humidity, which not only protects the art from environmental damage but also makes the Museum the perfect attraction for the entire family all year long. And, with the completion of a stunning $50 million expansion in 2006, it is a "must see."

With popular and unique exhibitions of the world's best art, casual and fun events and activities, Movies at the Museum, Music at the Museum, great shopping and dining, and many comfortable architectural niches where one can just relax and rejuvenate, Phoenix Art Museum truly means "cool art, in a cool place." Who needs the mall? Make Phoenix Art Museum your personal desert paradise.

Phoenix Public Library
Burton Barr is located on Central Avenue just south of McDowell road. Please see the Valley Metro website for public transportation routes serving the Burton Barr Library. The first floor houses a New Book area; the audio-visual, international languages and fiction collections; a 10,000 square foot Children's Section with its own Story Room; a new auditorium; and, the nationally acclaimed Special Needs Center with its adapted computer equipment, resources and Large Print materials. The Library also offers a fully integrated Spanish collection for adults and children. Materials include fiction and nonfiction books, paperbacks, a reference collection, videos and audio cassettes, with ESL (English as a Second language) materials housed in a quiet corner of the library.

Chase Ball Field
Opening in 1998, Chase Field was the first stadium ever built to have a retractable roof and natural grass. With MLB's announcement that Phoenix would be awarded an expansion team, a new stadium was built. Shaped like a massive airport hanger, construction on the stadium began November 16, 1995. Originally the stadium was known as Bank One Ballpark. The ballpark was renamed Chase Field in September 2005 after the merger between Bank One and JP Morgan Chase. Not just a regular stadium was built, but a retractable roof stadium, because of the desert heat. It became the first stadium with natural grass and a retractable roof that closes in five minutes, with air conditioning. After the first week of May, many games are played with the roof closed.

U·S Airways Center
With soaring glass walls, a 12x20 foot video screen and over 14,000 square feet of indoor space, the new Pavilion creates a grand entrance to the "all-new" U·S Airways Center that leaves a lasting impression on all guests. A uniquely flexible indoor/outdoor venue, the Bud Light PASEO features state-of-the-art sound and projection systems, as well as a stylish bar area and facilities for full stage shows.

The Irish Cultural Center
Ask any visitor why he or she comes to the Irish Cultural Center. You are likely to hear about fiddle lessons or ceili dancing, concerts or exhibits, or the great-grandmother who came to America from Ireland decades ago. Sometimes it is just curiosity about the rustic stone buildings with slate roofs that share the urban Phoenix environment with new condos and light rail. A visionary plan is in development to enhance the Center's mission to "preserve Irish heritage and culture and illuminate the culture of Ireland and the Irish in America." In the works is an 11,000-square-foot, state-of-the-art library which will house cultural and educational resources to bring the richness of Ireland, past and present, to the general public.

Local Home Buying Agents are Knowledgeable About Your Area

According to the National Association of Realtors Profile of Home Buyers, home buyers want reputable real estate agents who are knowledgeable about their marketplace. Knowledge of the local market and knowledge of the local area are the most important factors to home buyers today. Home buying experts suggest that when it comes time to write an offer, you should have seen every home for sale in the immediate area. Only then will you be able to compare your desired home against all of the other homes in marketplace whether they are listed in the Multiple Listing Service (MLS) or are For Sale By Owner (FSBO) homes.

The Internet has been instrumental in helping buyers identify and buy homes for sale but the home buying experts say that consumers still need someone to help sift through all of the real estate data and help interpret it for them, especially to figure out how much to offer for a home for sale. This is why working with local home buying agents who are knowledgeable about your area will be helpful in your negotiations toward a successful home purchase.

The Arizona Paradise Living Groups agents not only are knowledgeable about the real estate in your area, they are also required to look after your interests solely, so that you get the best possible advice. This is particularly important if you are considering buying luxury real estate or buying a vacation home.

Design Curve: Grand Garages

bd

garage

Garages are more than just a spot to keep your wheels out of the elements. Homeowners are now decking out this once forgotten catchall with luxury amenities and eye-catching design—just like the vehicles it houses.

For so long, the garage was very much an afterthought when it came to home design. Not anymore. “The garage is the last blank canvas in the home and there is plenty you can do with it,” says Brad Randolph, vice president of sales and business development for Phoenix-based PremierGarage. And when you think about it, it only makes sense that homeowners are finally paying attention to the effect the garage has on their dwelling’s curb appeal. “The [garage is the] only room in the home that people can really judge you by, the only one out there that everyone can see,” says Chad Haas, founder and president of Beaverton, Ore.’s Vault, a firm that provides furnishings for upscale garages. “The garage is the first visible architectural feature that dominates the front landscape of most homes. This is how most Americans come and go from their home.” With fashion-forward design elements, lush amenities and square footage that rivals that of some houses (one of Randolph’s projects measured more than 9,000 square feet, though between 5,000 and 8,000 is more common), the garage is finally—truly—coming to the forefront of the home.

Unlike many areas of the home, garages require certain building and design materials that can withstand natural elements, like temperature changes and humidity. Therefore, in premium garages today, metal cabinets are used instead of wood varieties, and polished concrete and porcelain tile take the place of traditional, oil-stained concrete. Such materials can also be more visually pleasing, as cabinets can be made available in striking colors, and innovative flooring (i.e., Vault’s Garazzo flooring system and PremierGarage’s PremierOne systems) gives off high shine and can be purchased in
different textures and hues, from black to white and everything in between.

Garage door design has even upped the aesthetic ante, featuring lovely details, hand-forged hardware and fine woods. “If you have a multimillion dollar home and you throw vinyl garage doors on it, where’s the charm?” Haas posits. “There is a homogenization of the same look in every neighborhood. The homes that really appeal to people and have curb appeal have addressed the garage door.” (Haas, for example, is a fan of carriage doors. “They are really beautiful and maintain architectural harmony.”)

Homeowners and designers are also approaching the garage as more than just a car port. “We are having a lot of requests for incorporating more of a lifestyle into [the garage],” says Randolph, whose clientele includes professional athletes and celebrities. Hobby areas are being integrated into the garage; even wet bars and seating areas are making appearances. “We have designed almost an entertainment environment for more than just hopping in a car and showcasing your cars to friends and other people,” he says. Even when it comes to getting greasy and working on vehicles, homeowners and hobbyists now have a chance to do so in an attractive atmosphere.

Haas recalls one client who treated his garage, which happened to be a separate carriage house, like a museum, with architectural lighting and cathedral ceilings accented by wood beams. The same structure even housed an office and wash/detail bay. “[The client] owns several cars [worth more than] $1 million and treats them no different than he’d treat a Picasso,” says Haas, who founded his company after being displeased with his own messy garage. “He wants to show it off; he is very proud of it. He doesn’t want to throw a car cover over it in a crammed garage space. He has put it front and center and created almost an art gallery in his home.” The client has even used the opulent area, which carries a price tag of more than $1 million, as a party space—just another example of how garages are the new black when it comes to home design.
