Celebrating Thanksgiving – Surviving Togetherness
On Thursday, November 27, 2008, we will celebrate by giving our thanks for all things good in our life, especially family and friends.
We will express this day by gathering around the table
to share a meal and drinks that will most likely include turkey, dressing, potatoes, cranberries, and don’t forget the pumpkin pie. There will of course be talk of the past, present and future, the current news of the economy and the bailouts , the presidential election, and the list goes on.
This year we have boundless topics to explore with loved ones we haven’t seen for a while. It will be important to keep a cool head and remember other people do have opinions (whether you agree with them or not).
Enjoy the holiday and time you have to spend together,
and remember,
we get to do it all over again in 30 days at Christimas!

HOW TO CONDUCT A SAFE OPEN HOUSE
• First and foremost never set an appointment to show your home unless the potential buyer has given you their name and number. You can than call back to verify the number when you confirm the appointment. It is also a good idea to keep a showing log that a copy can be given to a friend or family member.
• Do not volunteer any personal information; only give information about the home you are trying to sell.
• Make sure you schedule your tour when you can be accompanied by a spouse, friend, neighbor or family member.
• Have a sign-in sheet near the front door so any prospective buyer can fill out their name, phone number and address before you conduct the tour of your home. Make sure this information is complete.
• Never leave anyone alone while conducting the tour and always watch what they are doing in your home.
• Secure all valuables such as jewelry, guns, artwork, collectibles, etc. If you have anytime of value, than keep it out of site.
• Make sure you remove all prescription drugs from your bathrooms. If someone asks to use a bathroom, they may be looking for drugs.
• When conducting the tour do not enter the room with the visitors, keep yourself by any exit door.
• Know your secondary escape route from the home if it is needed.
• Remove any personal information from the refrigerator and keep your purse out of site to prevent your identity being stolen.
As Realtors we deal with this issue on a daily basis. We take our safety very seriously and so should you. Keeping you and your family safe should be your first priority when conducting an open house.

Once upon a time there was a house - my house - and it had the unthinkable happen to it. It was destroyed by water because a roofer didn't take the proper precautions when 7 inches of rain was predicted when they started to re-roof our home. This happened on June 13, 2008 (Friday the 13th, yeah we do laugh about the date now).
I thought I had seen it all after being a Realtor for 20 years, but I was wrong. I had never seen how destructive water could be. I have seen like everyone else the photos of hurricane victims and their homes with standing water in them and feeling so sad for their situation. Even though my disaster came about differently, I still ended up with the same damage as if I had been flooded.
Our home had to be gutted down to studs and mold remediated, it meant starting all over. It has been several months now and we are getting close to the end. We were hoping to be in my Thanksgiving but it looks more like the middle of December. In the meantime, it has been an adventure, both good and bad rebuilding.

I thought I had done everything right when selecting our original roofer, but after the fact I probably should have done more background checking.
The moral of my story is if you find yourself in need of a contractor please go to http://homerepair.about.com or any other website to gather information about the process. Also talk to family and friends, referrals are the best. Be as informed as possible.
