Hide-A-Way Hills, Ohio Lake of Four Seasons Boat Ride

With 3 different access points to the Lake of Four Season, I am often asked what it looks like out on the lake. While not terribly exciting, here's some video I shot on my first trip out on the lake this past week.

Scarlet Tanager - Zaleski Wild Turkey Management

While deep in the Zaleski Wild Turkey Management Area, I happened along a stream with the most beautiful bright red bird.

With the colors so bright, I had at first mistaken it for a long forgotten fisherman's bobber.

But wait. . . it moved???

Many seeing the picture, insisted I had captured a Cardinal. Being a novice bird watcher, I knew this could not be true. The beak of this bird was not black and the typical black mask was missing.

Thanks to the internet, I believe I have correctly identified this beautiful creature as a Scarlet Tananger. This is the first for me and one I'm thrilled to share with you.

Of course, if you believe I have missed the identification of this bird, please feel free to share. I'm just an amateur and bound to make a mistake.

Quick Pics - Rhododendron in Southern Ohio

While out for a long bike ride this past week-end, I ventured on to various gravel roads which led me deep into some of the surrounding areas of Zaleski State Forest. I've been fortunate to have seen large rhododendron plants in many southern states, but the plant pictured below was probably one of the largest I've seen growing in Ohio naturally, undisturbed, and not as a shrub in somebody's garden.

Rhododendron grow abundantly through out the Appalachian Mountains.
So much so, the plant has the honor of being the state flower of West Virginia, and is depicted on the Flag of West Virginia. My guess is the size of this particular plant is really no big surprise to many, but one I thought I'd like to add to my wildlife picture collection.

Hide-A-Way Hills, OH Beach - Improvements Continue

After several days of a pump, power washer, and some dedicated volunteers, the beach area continues to take on a fresh clean new look. Here we can see the before and after. The remainder is to be completed this week before new benches and clothes hanging hooks are to be installed. I, along with those I spoke to today at the beach, were amazed how nice the retaining wall power washing was turning out. Once again, a huge thank you goes to our volunteers.
