Finding the Right Atlanta Apartment (Part 2)
Once you know which amenities you’re willing to pay for, start looking in your ideal area. Where do you spend most of your time? Is being close to work or school most important or would you rather be close to where you spend your free time? If you can find a place for the right price in this area, then sign the lease! But most people say, “I want to live in Virginia-Highlands” or Midtown or Buckhead, and these neighborhoods have the highest prices and occupancy rates. Do you want to be in the middle of all the action? If so, you may want to team up with a couple friends to rent a house. If you find the right place, you can all save money while having plenty of space and privacy. Here’s some homes for rent right now in Virginia-Highlands, Midtown, Ansley Park/Morningside, Buckhead, Inman Park, or search yourself.
Renting a house isn’t the right choice for everybody, so here are some things to consider:
Do you prefer having your own space to entertain guests or host parties?
Some apartments have community areas that include grills or rooms with a wet bar/catering set-up, but you have to follow their rules, which can include restrictions on reserving the space, playing music, and time limitations.
Do you have a dog and want a fenced backyard?
Having a dog in an apartment can mean spending more time walking it outside or going to a dog park to let it get energy out. A house often gives your pet more room inside and out, which can save you time and makes your pet happier.
Do you get annoyed with parking garages, gates and elevators?
Many people get fed up with the time it can take to get in and out of apartment complexes. Renting a house lets your pull into the driveway and go right inside.
Renting a house can be a good transition into owning a house. It can be more difficult to find the right rental house for you, however. You also want somebody on your side to review the lease and negotiate the best price possible. So, if you are considering renting a house in Atlanta, give me a call today to get free professional advice about renting in Atlanta.

Finding the Right Atlanta Apartment (Part 1)
Finding the right Atlanta apartment can be an overwhelming process. Atlanta apartment buildings come range from two units to hundreds with as many or few amenities as you wish to have. Additionally, an increasing number of homeowners in Atlanta are deciding to rent out their home in lieu of selling it. This means the Atlanta renter has even more choices for where to sign a lease. There are some important questions you should ask yourself before putting ink to paper and committing yourself to an apartment for a year or more.
First, ask yourself which amenities you will really use on a regular basis. Is it worth it for you to have Lifestyle Fitness equipment in a rooftop gym like at Gables Midtown or do you know you’ll never actually see the gym after your tour? Are you looking to mix with other residents around a “resort-style pool” like the one at AMLI Parkside or are you just going to load up your car with friends on the weekend to “shoot the hooch” anyways? The point is that you should figure out which amenities you will use and find the place that has just what you need without a lot of extras because your monthly rent goes toward everything the complex offers.
A lot of people get caught up in choosing the best value for the average person, rather than finding the best value for their needs. I recommend taking ten minutes to list the things you already do on a daily basis and need to accommodate at your new apartment. If you exercise in a gym everyday, it might be worth it to pick a place with top-notch equipment and plenty of free weights, especially if it allows you to cancel your membership to L.A. Fitness. If you’ve already signed up for a two-year membership, however, you’re throwing money away. If you have a dog, you’ll want a convenient area to take it out. It usually works best to consider your daily life now and try to find the place that fits it best. Most people don’t completely change their lifestyle just because they change apartments, so make sure you’re not creating a new lifestyle to fit the ultra-chic apartment complex that seems amazing yet comes with a higher price tag.
In the next installment of “finding the right Atlanta apartment”, I will discuss the benefits of renting a house versus an apartment building.
