Tips for Cleaning Homes with Natural, Non-toxic Products

Tips for cleaning homes with natural, non-toxic products.

There is an entire industry that has developed with natural, non-toxic products with everything from soaps, to toilet cleaners, laundry detergents and more. But you don't have to buy commercial products. You can still clean “naturally” with only a few common products that may already be in your pantry, or that are easily available at your local grocery or health food store.

  1. Coarse salt : Sprinkle salt on fresh spills in the oven, and then wipe off. Coarse salt can clean copper pans and scour cookware. Sprinkle salt on rust stains and squeeze a lime or lemon over the stains, let sit for several hours and wipe off.
  2. Baking soda : Make a paste of baking soda and water. Baking soda can shine stainless steel and silver. The paste can also remove tea and coffee stains from cups and saucers. A paste made of Castile or vegetable-based liquid soap and a drop or two of essential tea tree or lavender oil and baking soda is great for sinks, countertops, toilets and tubs. Baking soda is especially effective on glass coffee pots and glassware. Baking soda also helps to remove red-wine stains from carpeting. Baking soda is an all-purpose cleaner.
  3. Lemon juice : Lemon juice works to remove grease from stoves and countertops. For cleaning and polishing wood furniture add 2 Tbsp lemon juice (real, not bottled) to 10 drops of lemon oil, plus a few drops of jojoba oil. Lemon juice can also be used as a bleaching agent on clothing. (Lemon oil and Jojoba oil are available in health food stores.)
  4. Grapefruit-seed extract : Add grapefruit seed extract to water in a spray bottle for an odorless way to kill mold and mildew. (Grapefruit seed extract is available in health food stores.)
