Bob Dunn: Experience Matters

Tamaringo's - Great Coffee Shop in the Garden

Located at 34261 Marshall Road in Abbotsford Tamaringo's is a cozy and fresh coffee shop located inside Cannor's Garden Center.

I thought "these guys are crazy opening a coffee shop in a garden center". I was wrong on this one as its now one of my favorite spots. Comfortable wicker furniture and spacious tables among thousands of growing plants provides what is probably the most relaxing bistro in town.

Good coffees, teas, pastries, and lunch items ... and my favorite ice creams.

Nostalgia in the Clova Theatre

If you live in the lower mainland (Vancouver-Fraser Valley) you owe yourself at least oone visit to the Clova Theatre in Cloverdale.

Built in 1946 this old fashion serpentine front theatre brought back a host of memories: attending Saturday matinees which featured Gene Audrey and Roy Rodgers; double features in my early teens watching Creature From the Black Lagoon, The Blob, The Thing With Two Heads and countless Dracula and Frankenstein movies; hold hands and putting my arm around a girl for the first time watching Elvis.

The charming Doris and her little doggie Buttercup welcomes the audience with a joke and requests to recycle the food and beverage containers.

The Clova makes for a cheap night out. Seven dollar each (cash only) which might include a double feature and only $2.00 for a large popcorn or coke if you bring your own container. The audience arrives with an assortment or large bowls or empty ice cream containers.

My Gosh!

I just realized I'm older than this historical building.

I guess there was more than one relic in Cloverdale on Saturday night.

Goats For Villages

Its playoff time in the National Hockey League teams compete for Lord Stanley's Cup.. A Canuck's fan, Joel Nagtegaal, has changed the call from Go Canuck Go to GoatCanucksGoat.

Here's the deal. Joe set out to raise enough money to buy sixteen goats which represents one goat for every Canucks win. Winning the Stanley Cup requires sixteen playoff wins so sixteen wins get sixteen goats for African Villagers.

The Canucks are out of the playoffs with only six wins and Joe does not have sixteen goats.

As of May 14th Joe has 684 goats!!!

Joe does not have the goats in his apartment as the logistics are handled by The Christian Reformed World Relief Committee.

Check out the Goat Meter by clicking on the logo below and you will find links to make donations from Canada or the USA.

Single Transferable Voting in BC

On May 12th, 2009 British Columbians are being asked to vote for or against changing our provincial voting system from our traditional first across the line wins all to a system called STV(Single Transferable Vote)

I was confused about the voting process until I found this animation on CBC that does a good job of explaining how the vote would work.

Proponents of this change are rallying around the call of fairness because everybody gets to cast a vote that counts. What they don't shout from the roofs is that your vote will only count if you cast a second or third choice. If your choice is not elected and the other choices are repugnant to you your vote will not count.

STV does more than changing the way we vote as our local representation will be drastically changed. Rather than a local riding with one representative we will have three representatives with divergent interest.

In my riding of Abbotsford I could end up being represented by Conservative, NDP and Marijuana politicians. Can you imagine getting those three getting together to represent my interests.

What a mess.

The older I get the more I like simple.

Don't let the proponents of STV make our lifes more complicated.

Vote NO NO NO on May 12 to STV
