As you travel west-bound on Route 80 from New Jersey into Delaware Water Gap, PA, there are plans to make the EZ Pass lanes a little easier for you to get through! The 3 left lanes as you approach the toll plaza will be upgraded to high speed lanes! Which means, you don't have to stop and wait for the gate to open and close after each car goes through. Special equipment will be installed to detect EZ Passes at higher rates of speed. It could even be in place by Memorial Day weekend of 2010, which is great news! Being such a vacation area, the first "unofficial" weekend of the summer attracts many people to the Pocono Mountains. Having high speed lanes on the toll plaza for EZ Pass holders will make that trip a little easier! If you'd like to take a look at the plans or attend the open house, head to the Quality Inn in Stroudsburg on West Main Street tomorrow, Wednesday September 23, from 3pm-7:30pm.
This weekend in the Pocono Mountains (September 26 & 27), you can head to Shawnee Mountain for the Rodeo & Chili Cook-Off! The beautiful fall weather is coming, and the leaves are *JUST* starting to change. It is a great time for a drive out to the Poconos and taste some chili! Saturday only is the chili cook-off, and it starts at 11:30am. Come taste all kinds of chili and vote on your favorite! But come early...you only have 2 hours to taste a LOT of chili!! The rodeo is at 2pm both days, and the gates open at 11:30am. The rodeo is approved and sanctioned by the Professional Rodeo Cowboys Association and will feature Pros from the First Frontier Circuit. Bring a blanket or lawn chair, and relax slopeside as the events unfold in front of you. Shawnee Mountain is located off Routes 80 & 209, and is very easy to find! AWSOM, the new Animal Welfare Society of Monroe, has flocked Keller Williams! What does that mean? We have to raise $250 for this great cause, so the cute pink flamingos can keep flying around Monroe County! We can't let them sit! It raises awareness for this new group, which is going to be moving into the old SPCA shelter in Stroudsburg. The planned opening date is Halloween! It is a no kill shelter, and they will rely on donations and foster families to help care for the poor animals who are left behind, found or need a home for any number of unfortunate reasons. If you're a nature lover, you should take advantage of our Pocono Environmental Education Center (PEEC) in Dingman's Ferry. It has served the education community for over 30 years, with approximately 24,000 visitors annually! They host many programs, including bird watching, guided hiking expeditions, canoe trips, retreats, and your kids can even fulfill their boy or girlscout badges! It is such a wonderful place to learn more about our environment, enjoy the Pocono Mountains area and the beauty it offers, or simply volunteer and share your skills and knowledge. Some of the next events they are hosting are "All About Bats", "Raptor Rush Hour", and "Fall Photography Weekend with John Barclay".
