New R50 insulation added to our 1983 home.

This week we had insulation added to our home. We went from 6 inches of insulation, installed when the house was built in 1983, to 20+ inches of insulation with a radiant barrier. This should save us a lot of money over the years. That said, we have a vaulted ceiling so there's still other solutions to find. A lot of our roofline doesn't have attic over it.

Be sure your soffit vents stay clear. Looks like we're inside a Jiff-pop.

BEFORE with 6 inches of old insulation and no barrier

We went with the film because it offers 99% radiant barrier. The spray on products offer at most 75% radiant barrier and has many variables which may reduce effectiveness from there. First is the saturation of aluminum flecks in the paint. It's easy to thin the solution without a ready way for the homeowner to test. The second is the thoroughness of the painted application itself. If any part of the rafters or decking is uncovered, they become a weak spot where radiant energy passes through.

The tent style application keeps the radiant barrier above the air conditioning equipment in the attic. This reduces the pressure on the A/C and helps it operate more efficiently.

We chose Energy Attic, ( http://www.energyattic.com ) because they had the most comprehensive solution, and adequately answered our questions. Their barrier application uses baffles providing good ventilation from the soffit vents to the roof vents both above and below the barrier. They also evaluated the soffit vents and roof vents to ensure adequate air flow, and resealed air duct prevent A/C leakage prior to installation. They applied additional blown in fiberglass insulation with no formaldehyde. This is the safest type to have near the gas furnace.

So far as do-it-yourself vs. using a vendor. Our attic spaces are very cramped and we both have issues with Claustrophobia, so not an option for us. In a larger attic like our last house, that would have been less of an issue. It took two installers about 6 hours to complete the installation. A good resource for instructions, advice, and supplies for the do-it-yourselfer is http://www.atticfoil.com . It's essential to evaluate your air flow and ensure your soffit and roof vents are adequately sized before applying the foil. This site provides an overview and rough ventilation calculations for contractors. http://www.airvent.com/professional/whyVent/evaluate.shtml
