Antiques Road Leads to Grand Rapids in Summer '08
This article ran in the Grand Rapids Press yesterday, Jan. 7 th, 2008 :
GRAND RAPIDS -- The Antiques Roadshow -- the television program where people might learn that ugly vase handed down from Aunt Gladys actually is worth thousands of dollars -- has selected Grand Rapids as one of the six cities it will visit this summer.
Appraisals are scheduled to be filmed in the city on Aug. 9. The location is to be determined, but a spokesperson said DeVos Place or Van Andel Area are likely destination given the amount of space required by the show.
While it's OK to start thinking about what to bring, show spokeswoman Judy Matthews said it's too early to start covering heirlooms in bubblewrap for safe transport.
The show plans to distribute only 3,400 pairs of tickets to people selected through a lottery. Applications are to be available starting Jan. 21 at http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/roadshow/tickets.html and the deadline is April 20, 2008.
If you are thinking of taking a family heirloom for an appraisal, go online January 21 to above website and apply for a ticket.
You never know, your ugly heirloom might be worth a year's college education or it might be worth nothing! At
the very least, you get a free appraisal and you might be featured on the Antiques Road Show program.

Calvin College, a local university, has presented free lectures to the Grand Rapids community for the last 19 years, in their January Series.
In their 20th year this January, they bring in world class speakers and entertainers covering many aspects of our world today, including ecology, politics, ethics, and humanitarian aid for this event.
We have attended a few of the lectures for the last few years, and found them to be highly informational and engaging. Because they are held during the day, it is difficult for most people to attend. The last few years, Calvin College has been recording the presenters, if possible, and keeping these lectures on their web site in The Archives. Note: the lectures are voice only, the video presentations are not taped. Many of the lectures are also available on the web in real time. ( You might want to take a long lunch and listen in)
The line up for this year is as follows, direct from the Calvin College web site:
