The most popular advertised Free Credit Reports are not free. I recommend to my Lynchburg area buyers that they get their credit reports and view for accuracy before they begin looking. Why is this important?
Every time someone else pulls your credit report, your score goes down. Pull your own, view to make sure all information is correct and take a copy with you to your lender so they do not have to pull.
In 2003 The Fair and Accurate Credit Transaction Act (FACTA), allowed all Americans to get one free credit report from each of the three major credit reporting agencies - Equifax, Experian and TransUnion - every 12 months.
Here are truely free resources:
AnnualCreditReport.com Telephone: (877)-322-8228
By mail: complete the Annual Credit Report Request form and mail it to: Annual Credit Report Request Service P.O. Box 105281 Atlanta, GA 30348-5281
You are also intitled to a free report if the following has happened:
1.You applied for a loan and were turned down. You must ask within 30 days of being turned down for the loan and you must supply the turndown.
2. You have lost your job or are unimployed and are applying for other jobs.
3. You're receiving public assistance.
4. You think there may be mistakes on your credit report due to fraud. •
5. Certain states require that reports are free every 12 months. Here is the contact information for the two major companies that do credit reports.
Equifax: 1-800-685-1111 Experian: 1-888-397-3742
TransUnion: 1-800-916-8800
Each company also will take requests by mail.
Equifax P.O. Box 740256 Atlanta, GA 30374 Experian P.O. Box 2002 Allen, TX 75013
TransUnion P.O. Box 2000 Chester, PA 19022 Include the following info in your letter. Be sure that each person requesting the report signs and dates the request, full name, date of birth, current and former address, social security number, your spouse's name, your phone number.
Another interesting site is www.myfico.com which allows you to enter information to estimate your fico score and what might influence it.
