This winter hasn't really been kind to the Charlotte Bobcats, but that's okay. They are three games away from going to the playoffs despite a difficult and sort of unsuccessful season. They are 11 games under 500 according to the Charlotte Observer. But that's no big deal because they have a shot at keeping their season alive, which is more than a lot of other teams have.
The Bobcats beat Golden State recently. I'm not going to lie, it doesn't take much to beat Golden State these days. Where Raymond Felton, the point guard and leader of the team score 26 points. It was a big night.
Former Carolina Tar Heel Raymond Felton has led the charge in a lot of ways. He was on the team that won the NCAA national championship in 2005.
All the bobcats have to do is win three more games. They are trying to get the eighth spot in the eastern conference so they can start their run for the title. They wouldn't have very good odds as the last team in the playoffs, but at least it's a shot and it's a chance to see the team in during the post season, which always sees some different basketball.
Heading into the final weeks of the regular season, the North Carolina Tar Heels Men's basketball team beat Georgia Tech after Maryland beat them in overtime last week.
The loss to Maryland was not a good loss because Maryland wasn't ranked. Maryland seems to find a way to win at home against ranked ACC teams though. It is part of what makes the ACC a difficult conference to be in.
All of the problems that Carolina had last week seemed to be ironed out. All of their top producers on the court like Danny Green and Tyler Hansbrough both had big nights in the ways that they usually have gotten the job done. Green had a good second half, the Charlotte Observer said. Hansbrough got inside to the basket and got fouled a bunch, which is his job.
The Tar Heels look forward to their second meeting with Duke that is the traditional end to both team's season. Then the ACC tournament begins and then the NCAA Tournament begins. This is going to be a really fun March with so many local teams and teams from North Carolina in the running to do great things in the tournament. Check it out in Charlotte NC.
On the west side of town in Latta Plantation Park, there is a center that takes care of birds. It is dedicated to envirnmental preservation and providing education about birds of prey and their habitat.
This may seem weird, but this center is located inside the city. It kind of tells you how suburban and green Charlotte the city is. When you fly into the city from somewhere more urban, you really see the difference.
The raptor center is a favorite place for elementary and middle schools to send their children for field trips. They provide a home to a variety of bird species that feed on animals rather than plants or bugs.
Kids can learn about owl pellets, which are basically owl waste products which usually contain mice skeletons. I'm not making this up. This is just what happens. Kids learn stuff about science projects and it's not always chemestry.
But the park is full of trails and full of nature exhibits. So there is plenty of space to walk around and be surrounded by nature. If you really want to learn about nature, and gross things about what owls eat, there's plenty of opportunity for that too, I suppose.
Forcasters are predicting six inches of snow for Sunday in Charlotte NC during the day and some at night. It might make for a snowy drive on Monday in a place where many people are not used to snow and ice.
Many of you northerners out there might think that being unfamiliar with snow and ice is a good thing. You would probably be right. It also makes snow and ice much more special when it does come.
But it is funny here because when there is snow and ice, it seems like everyone in Charlotte rushes to the grocery store to buy milk and bread. Don't ask me why milk and bread, but that's what the store sells out of every time there is a winter storm. I'm not sure it really makes sense, because if the power goes out, the milk goes bad. Huh.
The forcasters say that the snow will likely blanket the entire state. Even places as far south as Atlanta may see snow. I haven't lived in Atlanta, but I'm guessing it doesn't snow there much at all.
Hopefully, the crews that clear the roads will be ready to get out and clear a path for people to get to work. It all depends on if this is a wet snow that turns to slush or a light fluffy dry snow. I can't wait to find out.
I read in the Charlotte Observer today that the Jonas Brothers, the ubiquitous musical group that is taking America by storm, visited a bunch of movie theaters to promote their new movie this weekend. They stopped by Regal Cinemas in Stonecrest, near Pineville and Ballantyne.
Nick, Joe and Kevin are surprising all kinds of people this weekend on their tour, which will take them all over the place on a private jet. They are met by screaming teenagers wherever they go.
They only jumped out of their car for a second before jumping back in and heading off to Atlanta. They started their tour in Las Angeles on Friday.
Will Smith did something similar a few months ago when whatever movie he had acted in was released. I guess this is the new marketing tactic that the studios have adopted to encourage a reluctant public to go out and spend some cash on movies these days.
Perhaps we could all take a lesson from these marketing geniuses. If I want to sell more houses, perhaps I should see if Rachel Ray or someone is available to show up and cook lunch for people when I'm showing the house. If your business is installing selling pasta, maybe you could get a basketball star to show up at the store to make people come.
Maybe I'm thinking about this all wrong. The idea is simple, getting celebrities to come out to the business where their products are sold is a no brainer. The genius was getting them to actually do it.
