League City Realtor Brian Worrell can tell you all about League City! League City, Texas is on the Texas Gulf Coast twenty-five miles north of Galveston Island and twenty miles south of Houston. It encompasses 52.3 sq miles, 1.1 sq miles of it being water. There are 3 families that are considered the founding families of League City. They were the Butler´s, Cowart´s, and Perkin´s. The Cowart´s settled on a creek now known as Coward´s Creek. The Perkin´s settled on a creek lined with Magnolia trees and named in Magnolia Bayou. The Butler´s settled inland.
The town proper´s first resident was George W. Butler who moved from Louisiana in 1873. The area was first known as Butler´s Ranch or Clear Creek. In the 1890´s J. C. League started acquiring the land and in 1896 changed the name to League City.
The town originally raised cattle, but turned to farming in the 1890´s. This was when Clear Creek Development organized and sold lots to farmers. The crops that were grown in this area were Satsuma oranges, cotton, corn, potatoes, sugarcane, cucumbers and strawberries. They later experimented with grapefruit, figs and dates.
In 1913 League City had a high school, pickling plant, two broom factories, a state bank and four churches, one being the Friends church. League City also had a weekly paper called the League City News, improved roads were under construction and electric lighting was being proposed. In 1946 the town became the center for railroad shops and a Humble Oil tank farm. League City´s school district was established in 1906 and later merged with Clear Creek Independent School District. This was a growing city and as the population raised the city incorporated land as far west as Friendswood.
League City is alive with opportunity, optimism and energy. Its diverse community has a unique blend of high-tech aerospace and petrochemical companies, and features a quaint tree-lined historic commercial district. The area is home to the third largest concentration of pleasure boats in the United States. Residents are proud of the area's quality of life, suburban lifestyle, economic opportunities, low crime rate, schools and recreational amenities

I for one can't wait for the construction on I-45 to be complete. It's killing my open houses in League City - MarBella. This is such a beautiful community and sales have been red hot! But, the weekend open houses are not so hot on weekends when I-45 is closed... I'm very excited about the finished product though. It should really help traffic flow. And the NASA bypass is awesome!
Then again, nobody ever said they loved traffic!!!

AREA NEAR NASA BYPASS TO BE CLOSED THIS WEEKEND:
The northbound and southbound lanes of Gulf Freeway will close this weekend as the state’s transportation department continues road construction in the area around NASA Bypass. Interstate 45 will close between 9 p.m. Friday and noon Sunday, according to the Texas Department of Transportation. The department will close all southbound lanes between Bay Area Boulevard and NASA Bypass. On the northbound side, the department will close only the inside left lane between FM 518 to NASA Bypass, said Karen Othon, spokeswoman. The lane closure will allow transportation workers to move concrete barriers, stripe the pavement and install signs in order to direct traffic onto the new pavement just south of Bay Area Boulevard, Othon said. Motorists heading south on the Gulf Freeway this weekend will be directed off the interstate at Bay Area Boulevard, where they can continue driving on the frontage road, until the next open entrance ramp. Alternate routes include state Highway 3 for north-south traffic.

Implementation of the Washington Quiet Zone has already begun. This means simply that
THE TRAINS WILL NO LONGER SOUND THEIR HORNS HERE.
January 27, 2009
A Great Day for Washington Corridor Residents and the Citizens of Houston
Thanks to your action and your support,
the Washington Corridor Quiet Zone
Has Achieved Tier I Status!
Quiet Zone Work to Begin by June 2009.
January 27, 2009 - Supporters of the Washington Quiet Zone gathered in the City Council Chambers to voice their support for the Washington Quiet Zone effort. During the meeting, speakers were called to the lobby for an announcement.
The city manager's office let us know that the new rankings for Quiet Zone implementation had been released earlier in the day, partially in response to the speakers' presence on the City Council's agenda.
The Washington Quiet Zone was one of six potential Quiet Zones that was selected to receive top priority, with funds from the Fiscal Year 2009 budget (July 2008-June 2009) for completion. [UPDATE, January 28, 2009 - The District H office clarified this statement on a phone call today, stating that preliminary work had been completed during the ranking process, and that Fiscal Year 09 funds will be committed before the end of the fiscal year (June 2009) toward the quiet zone effort. Once the City Council vote is completed, the expectation is that the Quiet Zone will be fully implemented within 12 months, pending compliance inspection by the Federal Railroad Administration. As we know, these timelines do tend to change, but we will do our part to help keep this on schedule...with your help!]
The Washington Quiet Zone will be implemented from National to Sherwin.
The map at the link below (PDF format) from the City of Houston shows all Quiet Zones and their rankings. The Zones denoted by letters are Zones that are funded by developers or other funding sources, and the zones labeled 1 through 6 are the zones that received Fiscal Year 2009 priority.
This is an exciting milestone for our effort. However, your support is still needed to ensure this process continues. The City Council will not officially vote on this measure for another few weeks. We will keep you updated as more information becomes available.
The WashingtonQuietZone.com team would like to extend a sincere thank you to Mayor White and the entire City Council for their support thus far, and their commitment to making the Washington Avenue Corridor a world-class area.
A special thank you goes out to all supporters of the effort. Your involvement, letters, e-mails and phone calls are what is making this possible.
