THIS IS A TRIBUTE TO VERA FREEMAN!
This information was taken from John Sherwood;" Maryland Vanishing Lives". Maryland has many unique restaurants that reflect the personalities, tastes, and idiosyncracies of their owners. But Vera's White Sands Marina and Restaurant in Lusby continued to survive in the boonies because of the owner's determination to keep it alive, even if it wasn't all that profitable.
Far off the beaten track, Vera's was a real lulu of a restaurant lurking at the dead end of a twisting back road called White Sands, off of Rt. 4 about 10 miles north of Solomons, in the most UniquewaterfrontinSouthernMaryland. Aloha, and welcome to a Polynesian fantasy in a South Seas setting, where frozen cocktails were served with swizzle sticks that pop open to form paper umbrellas. Unsuspecting boaters navigating historic St. Leonard Creek, off the Patuxent River, came upon a hillside of banana trees and felt as if they've slipped into some kind of Bermuda Triangle. The restaurant's thached roof had been replaced, but the interior had a reed ceiling held up by bamboo poles and was crowded with ornate chairs and tables, marble staturary, carved Polynesian figures, ponderous antiques, Oriental umbrellas hanging from the ceiling, curiousities, bric-a-brac, peacock feathers---and cozy nooks for romantic dining.
Vera Freeman, who did not discuss her age ("What's the point?" she asked). lived next door to her restaurant and marina in "Vera's Villa,"her own version of an all-white Taj Mahal with a swimming pool in the middle of her marble-floored living room.
Vera upstaged everythinbg when she matrialized nightly, as if in a vision, through the front door of the White Sands shortly before sunset. She had a vast wardrobe that changed with her moods. Picture her wearing a pink , diaphanous floor-length sari from India, jewelry, gold, and pearls hung from her beck, forehead, fingers, and wrists. Conjure up a platinum-haired version of Nora Desmond in the Hollywood classic Sunset Boulevard, star sweeping into her fabricated world of glamour and onto the center stage of her restaurant, where she was the indisputable star. Sometimes a huge brass gong was sounded upon her arrival. One of the bartenders, Buster or Carlos, wearing a Hawaiian shirt and leis, immediately poured a shallow glass of champagne as Vera glided inside and settled down on a vinyl leopaardskin barstool at the end of ther bar, across fromn thr grand piano. When the piano player striked up a Vera favorite, the outdated "Sheik or Araby," it was as if someone had waved a wand and commanded the evening to begin.
As mildly egocentric as all this sounds, Vera herself was an astute, serious businesswoman, fully aware that people came to see her and her exotic restaurant as well as for the cuisine, " I love being surrounded by all these beautiful objects d'art (labled "The Freeman Collection") that she had assembled during decades of compulsive shopping trips to exotic ports on formal cruise ships such as Cunard's QE,2,on which she was a regular. This trip to Never-Never Veraland started when she left her native Montana for Hollywood sometime befor World War !!. But instrad of finding fame and stardom as a chorus girl, she fell in love with the wealthy "Doc" Freeman, known then as the "Optornetrist to the stars."Eventually, they left Hollyswood for the cruising life abord large, crewed motoryachts---all of them named the "White Sands." During one of these cruises in the early 1940s they discovered, and fell in love with beautiful St.Leonard Creek. They bought hundreds of acres, filled in a shoreline with ons of white sand (all long sinced washed away),opened a private marina and clubhouse, and called it the White Sands Yacht Club.
For years it was a"must" stop along the follow-the-sun, cruising circuit of large motor yachts. But nearby Solomons, once nothing but a fishing village, was much closer to the Chesapeke Bay and had developed into a major pleasure boating center. The boat traffic slowed considerably, although Vera endured as a living legend. She used to say "It's true I travel from October to April",she said" but I don't know what I would do if I didn't have this restaurant to come back to in the spring. Oh, let's not talk about such unpleasant things, It's much too depressing. Let's just have another cocktail and have some more fun"

Doctor Freeman and Vera set their sites on a creekside piece of property, above, in Southern Calvert County, which Vera reigned over, spending the next five decades transforming it into her own Shangri-la.
