Detroit Lake, Mongold Park

detroit lake mongold state park 1
A Beautiful Day to be at Detroit Lake, Oregon

One of the biggest recreational draws in our area is Detroit Lake. There are several areas to launch boats, picnic and enjoy the surroundings. Mongold State Park is just one of the four prime visitor areas on the lake.

I visited Mongold yesterday with my daughter and her friend. We took a small lunch, our chairs, a blanket and books and decided to get some sun! It was a beautiful day. The water is still chilly but clear.

Mongold has a great spot to launch boats and plenty of parking for trailers. There is a separate parking lot for the day use folks. There are several shaded picnic areas with tables. The restrooms are clean and there are showers for use after using the swimming area. The view to Piety Island is nice and a short walking trail leads to more picnic tables. This is a pay per use park and it will cost you $3.00 at the entrance.

Fishing the North Santiam River

Water tumbling over the Mill City Falls is much clearer this week and a little lower. Kayakers and rafters are taking advantage of this nice day to hit the river. In fact, I snapped a picture of these rafters this morning.

rafters on Santiam at Mill City

6-14-08 Santiam River at Mill City Falls

ODFW: North and South Santiam River: Stream flows in the North and South Santiam rivers have been coming down, but still could come back up quickly with warmer temperatures. Steelhead numbers at Willamette Falls are encouraging, with more than 6,000 having come over so far. Willamette mainstem anglers have had some good success in the Salem area. Spring chinook numbers remain very low and all streams above Willamette Falls, except for the Molalla River, are now closed to the retention of any chinook.

Most of the valley pond stocking with trout is done for this season. Warmer water temperatures make them less suitable for trout and better for warm water fish, however, Walling and Wirth ponds in Salem will be stocked for Free Fishing Weekend. Bass crappie, bluegill, and catfish are available in most of the valley floor ponds and are becoming more active as the water warms up.

Stream flows in the Breitenbush and North Santiam rivers above Detroit Reservoir, and in Quartzville Creek above Green Peter Reservoir are receding some, though still affected by snowmelt. All three streams are scheduled to be stocked with trout this week.

For more information about the stocking schedules and the weekly recreation report check out the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife website.

North Santiam State Park, Discover Nature

North Santiam State Park

nsp drive

A short drive down a lush, tree lined drive is a hidden gem of a state park. North Santiam State Park is located approximately at Mile Post 26, on Hwy 22 East, just a few miles from Mill City.

Nsp river
The River is high. Normally this rock is 15' out of the water!

One of the best features of this park; it's still FREE! I don't think there are very many free State Park's left in the state! Most of them have a $3.00 fee to use. This naturalized state park is a favorite for locals to launch drift boats, fishermen for the various fishing holes and it has several good picnic areas. There are asphalt trails and wooden chip-lined trails winding throughout the park and it is worth the walk to the river. It's a wonderful place to snap a few pictures, read a book or barbeque a burger.

nsp picnic table

nsp blackberry blossoms

When I was a child, we didn't have lot of money to go and do things that would cost money, like a movie. This was a place my mom would take my brothers and I to run off some energy. She could sit and read a book and get a little peace and quiet. We spent hours combing the edges of the river for salmon fly larvae, periwinkles, and salmon fry. We were always so excited if we actually caught a little fish. In late summer, we spent time looking for wild red huckleberries. Yummy! Sour, but yummy!

Blackberry Blossoms

nsp shelter

This park is day use only and has plenty of parking and restroom facilities, running water and a newly built picnic shelter. There are plenty of parking places, including large areas for recreational vehicles and vehicles with long loads.
