For the past three years Secret House Winery has played host to Faerieworlds . This year’s line up looks like another great show.
Come be enchanted by the people, vendors, musicians and honored guests. This year will see the return of hosts Brian, Wendi Froud and son Toby. If you have ever seen the movie The Empire Strikes Back you will know Wendy’s work immediately.

Designed Yoda she did, yeeeesss!
Brian and Wendy have designed characters for The Dark Crystal, Labyrinth while working with Jim Henson and have a following of admirers for their Faerie artwork and books. Lady Cottington’s Pressed Fairy Book is a personal favorite. As a child, Toby was in the movie, Labyrinth with David Bowie. It is a cult classic and is one of my girls favorite flicks.

Kendra, Toby and Kelsey
My daughters and I enjoy people watching and this is a great venue. Many
people choose to leave the real world behind and escape to a fantasy world of fairies, goblins and trolls. The costumes are amazing. Many vendors sell costumes, faerie wings, and other handmade treasures you will never see in any store. Truly, you can come to the festival a mere human and leave looking like a fantasy creature.
Honored guests include artists Amy Brown and Jessica Galbraith. Other featured artists and authors are Jody Bergsma, J. Corsentino, Jan Delyth, Maxine Gadd, and Diana S. Zimmerman.
One of the best things about the festival is the music. There are three stages and world class performers. This year’s Festival performers come from Germany, Spain, and many parts of the U.S. and will feature Trillian Green, Woodland with the World of Froud Good Faeries Lightshow, Gaia Consort, Qntal and the World of Froud Bad Faeries Lightshow and many more.
Food and Drink are plenty and a trip to the festival would not be complete without trying a cool cup of Goblin Grog.

Tickets are on Sale now and an sell out crowd is expected. Faerie Blessings!

I love Oregon, let me show you why!
Pull up a chair and enjoy the parade.
The Grand Parade began with the American Legion Color Guard presentation of the flag.
Quickly followed by the Grand Marshal; Josephine Reid and the Mill City Mayor; Tim Kirsch.
The Freres Lumber Company entered a three-log load log truck.
Dan and Sandy Phelps and family, former Mill City residents, grace the parade with their magnificent stage coach and team of Clydesdale horses.
Our parade wouldn’t be complete without the Santiam Shrine Club entry and the little motorized bathtubs. Check out the spray of gravel from this one! I didn’t think it would peel out but it did!
The parade was short but well organized.
There is nothing like the start of the fireworks Mill City. The whoomp of the first cake out of the mortar and the echo throughout the canyon from the explosion is spine chilling. The Mill City Fire Department provided a wonderful display of fireworks this year. Way to go fellas!
My daughter Kelsey is a second year member of the Lady Warriors. This is an ASA 18U team coached by Santos Lingmai. The team is made up of girls from North Salem High School, McNary, Central, Santiam, McMinnville, and Yamhill-Carlton. It is a great group of girls. The kind of girls that work hard, check attitudes at the door and have fun. Their home field is North Salem High School.

Saturday, June 28, 2008 these girls played 4 games in 100 degree heat and won all but the semi-final game. This tournament was for the Regional Nationals and held at Vancouver Girls Softball Association home complex in Washington State. A win would have put them in the Championship bracket for a trip to Illinois to play in the National Championship. In the last game, we were the away team. With Kelsey pitching, we were ahead 2 - 0 in the bottom of the seventh with one out, no one on base. The coach decided to make a pitching change and we ended up losing the game by one run. I know I should be disappointed they lost, but I am not. These nine girls played an amazing game of softball, with an over the fence 2 run homer by Cassandra, plus Abby and Cassandra both made Major League plays by with two "on the run" and one amazing diving catch. Each girl contributed throughout the day with stellar moments. It is rare to find a team that is not "carried" by one or two players. Hats off to you girls, you rock! Kelsey congratulations on your single, double and home run in the first game! You almost hit the for the cycle, keep up the good work. (I know you were disappointed the second team you played, with the intentional pitch-out walks, but hey a walk gets you on base, and you know how you like to run around the bases.)

Salem loves softball and has an excellent base of softball teams for all ages, Little League, ASA (American Softball Association), plus teams for adults including co-ed leagues. Wallace Marine park in Salem is a fabulous facility and with the current gas prices, I wish we played more games there. Wallace Marine Park is maintained and operated by the City of Salem. There are five fields, concession stand, restrooms, covered eating area and lots of shade. Located in West Salem near the Willamette River, it is close to Roth's supermarket, Burger King and Dairy Queen, Subway, McDonald's and Taco Time if you forget your sunscreen or you just need a bite to eat. If you are looking for something a little more substantial, visit La Hacienda Real Mexican Restaurant on Wallace Road. The homemade tortillas are delicious, the salsa fresh, and the Pollo ala Crema -simple perfection in a cream sauce!

The Niagara Park area has a colorful history in the Santiam Canyon. According to the historical marker on site; "the area acquired its name in September 1890 when a town site was platted to be followed by the establishment of a post office in October of that year. In the late 1890's a rubble masonry Dam was started to develop power for a mill designed to make paper from straw. "
"At stages in the river flow surged through a cleft 4'3" wide. Difficulties in constructing the Dam caused the paper mill project to be abandoned. Hydroelectric development continued at intervals but floods and erosions caused the project to be abandoned in 1912 after approximately $100,000 had been spent." About this time, large numbers of Chinese workers were brought in to work on a rail line that was to be constructed over the Santiam Pass. This led to the belief by some that Chinese workers built the dam, misinformation that has kept the China Dam legend alive. The rock work is truly a work of art and my family and I have spent many hours exploring the rocks and watching the river.
At the turn of the century, Niagara had a large store, hotel, numerous dwellings and a tavern. It gained fame at one time for the smallest post office in the United States 6x8 feet. The post office was discontinued June 14, 1934."
One of my high school friends, lived on the site of the former Post Office and she used the small building as her bedroom. I always thought it was fascinating she lived in a piece of history. There are several fishing holes on this stretch of the river.
