Airdrie Skate Board Park to Break Ground This Spring
It has been a long, arduous process in the eyes of the Airdrie skateboarding community, but the long-awaited skateboard park at Chinook Winds will break ground this spring and is expected to be completed by fall. The conceptual plans for the park were unveiled Wednesday night at city hall by New Line Skateparks Inc who have handled the design aspects. Skateboarding enthusiast and co-owner of Sully Boardsports, Jon Salomons, is excited to see the park so close to becoming reality.
Chinook Winds Park is 65 acres of sport and recreation land that will add to the city’s plan of having one major recreation destination in each area of the city. “When we did our parks master plan two or three years ago, we wanted various major park destinations in all areas of the city,” Greene said. “East Lake is our destination in the east; Nose Creek in the central part of the city is a major regional park and Chinook Winds is the major multi-use recreational park in the southwest of the city.”
The $900,000 price tag on the skatepark will be paid for by developer funded contributions and the Airdrie Extreme Athletics Association had agreed to raise $30,000 through various fundraising events. In addition to the ball diamonds that already grace the site and the skatepark, other recreational options are being looked at for Chinook Winds Park.
“What we’re looking at right now is another playground, natural areas, trail systems and we’re contemplating a splash park, tennis courts, or football,” Greene said.

With yet another Snowfall Warning issued today it seems to important to post this warning for parents and children, from the Airdrie Public Works Department many of the large snow banks created by snowplows and graders are removed throughout the city.
“Snow banks around the city are an attraction to kids, but can present many dangers to the children that play in them, especially where the snowplow and grader operators are doing their work,” said Lorne Stevens, public works and engineering manager for the City of Airdrie.
One close call was avoided by city workers’ due diligence. “We came across one instance recently when our guys went in to to remove the snow. They were doing a workplace assessment and they found some kids who had tunneled into a snow bank,” Stevens said. “I’m not professing this as a close call, near miss type of thing but I think it could come in handy and serves a lesson for parents to talk to their kids.”
The kids happened to be in the tunnel at the time and were removed safely before the snow bank was cleared. A walk-around is standard procedure before starting any project.
“Anytime our guys are going to out perform any sort of job it is a walk around the site to observe potential hazards ” Stevens said. “If we’re going in to do a water dig or something we’re focused on potential hazards in the area.
Low daylight in the early mornings and evenings, as well as physical obstructions can make it difficult for snowplow operators to spot children on or near snow banks. The changing weather also poses some risks as the snow gets softer and tunnels could potentially collapse.

With the Bank of Canada lowering its Rate to an all time low, Mortgage companies are starting to follow suit. I've been dealing with Cathy Lewis a mortgage broker with Jencor Mortgage for about 5 years, Cathy has been a Mortgage Broker now for over 20 Years and has never seen the Mortgage Rates this low. WHo ever thought we would be able to get a 5 year fixed mortgage for 3.99%, 3.89% id it's over $500,000. I still remember my first mortgage in 1981 at 18.75%, seems absurd now.
