FREE Child-friendly event in Savannah to take your kids to on Saturday, Oct 10.

A lot of folks in Savannah don’t realize that we have an Institute of Oceanography. Well, I guess I should rephrase that. Up until a couple of years ago, I didn’t realize that Savannah had an Institute of Oceanography, and I am almost ashamed to say that is was more or less about 10 miles from my house. The 700 acre campus sits on the banks of the Savannah River on Skidaway Island. So they are training our future Marine scientist and environmentalist out there. They are also home to Georgia Public Radio station WSVH (91.1 FM).

On Saturday, October 10 from noon – 4pm, they are hosting an open house for FREE. Yes, I said it FREE… with the economy the way it is, we need as many free activities as possible. So, after you feed the kids some lunch, go out to the Skidaway Institute of Oceanography and let your kids experience a little marine science. I have taken my kids for the last couple of years and they have always enjoyed it. I usually try to take a few of my friend's children also, because I think it is such a great opportunity. This year, according to their website (www.skio.peachnet.edu), they will have a variety of activities and tours for adults and children. They also will being having a reptile show so even more reason to go out and check it out (I will probably steer myself away from this activity). And for those of you that have high school and college students, the campus students will provide a career information session for those interested in a career in marine science. This will also be good thing for those students who haven’t decided what they want to do when they get to college. There is going to be an informal q & a session at 1pm also.

Hope to see you guys there!!! I'm going out to support.. People support my open houses, so why not support theirs?

Here’s directions in case you need them: I got these from their website, so don’t hold me accountable for any errors!

Getting to Skidaway Institute by Car - from Downtown

The most direct route from downtown to SkIO is to take the Truman Parkway:

1.. Follow Bay St. (Hwy 80 east) to President Street Extension (still Highway 80 east). Stay in the left-hand lane. (1A) to (1B)

2. Turn left onto the Truman Parkway. Follow the Truman Parkway (south).

3. Take the Whitfield Avenue exit off the Truman Parkway, turning left onto Spur 204 East (Diamond Causeway). (1C)

4. Continue on Spur 204 East over the Atlantic Intracoastal Waterway Drawbridge. You're now on Skidaway Island.

5. You'll pass several churches, the Skidaway Island State Park, and the Landings Village on the left. At the 4-way stop, turn left onto McWhorter Dr. (D) 6. Follow McWhorter Dr. to its end (4.2 miles). The SkIO Campus is at the end of the road. The SkIO Administration building is tan-colored brick and located near the water tower.

On October 5, 2009, people around the world will be celebrating World Habitat Day. Habitat for Humanity uses this day to raise awareness for improved housing for people around the world. On World Habitat Day, the focus in the U.S. will be neighborhood revitalization.

There will be events all over the world to help celebrate this day. I'm sure we can find our own way to help out those in need in our communities.

Also, ask Congress to make housing a priority by clicking this link and filling out the information. This will send an electronic letter to your Senator and Representative. http://secure.habitat.org/c.fpIQK4OyFkG/b.5488229/k.CCC5/Ask_Congress_to_Make_Housing_A_Priority_on_World_Habitat_Day/siteapps/advocacy/ActionItem.aspx?msource=AdvocAffRef
