JUVENILE DIABETES - Type 1 - Walk for a cure in San Antonio, Texas

APPROX. ONE YEAR AGO, MY VERY BEST FRIENDS, LITTLE ANGEL NICHOLAS (AGE 9) WAS DIAGNOSED WITH DIABETES TYPE 1. IT WAS DEVASTING FOR THE WHOLE FAMILY. MY FRIEND EVEN SENT FOR HER HUSBAND, ROBERT TO COME HOME EARLY FROM HIS DEPLOYMENT IN IRAQ. THEY SPENT WEEKS AT THE HOSPITAL UNTIL NICHOLAS WAS STABLE ENOUGH TO COME HOME. DURING THIS PERIOD, HIS DOCTOR TRAINED AND EDUCATED THEM ABOUT HIS ILLNESS AND THE NECESSARY PROCEDURES IN ORDER FOR HIM TO SURVIVE. THIER LIVES, TRASTICALLY CHANGED FOREVER. THEY COPE DAILY, LIVING THIER LIVES WITH A POSITIVE ATTITUDE. TODAY, WE ARE MORE AWARE AND THANKFUL FOR THE LITTLE THINGS IN LIFE!

"There are two major types of diabetes, called type 1 and type 2. Type 1 diabetes is also called insulin dependent diabetes mellitus (IDDM), or juvenile onset diabetes mellitus. In type 1 diabetes, the pancreas undergoes an autoimmune attack by the body itself, and is rendered incapable of making insulin. Abnormal antibodies have been found in the majority of patients with type 1 diabetes. The patient with type 1 diabetes must rely on insulin medication for survival!"

NICHOLAS HAS TO CHECK HIS BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS WITH A LITTLE DEVICE SEVERAL TIMES A DAY. HE ALSO HAS TO INJECT HIMSELF WITH INSULIN 5 TIMES A DAY INTO HIS STOMACH OR THIGH. THIS HE WILL DO FOR THE REST OF HIS LIFE. IT BREAKS ALL OF OUR HEARTS, BUT WE DON'T LET HIM SEE THAT. HIS SPIRITS ARE UP AND HE IS A HAPPY AND ACTIVE YOUNG BOY LIKE ALWAYS. IF MY FRIEND AND HER HUSBAND, COULD TAKE THE ILLNESS FROM NICOLAS AND PUT IT ON THEMSELVES..... THEY WOULD. FOR THE LONGEST THEY THOUGHT THEY DID SOMETHING WRONG WITH HIS DIET, THINKING THAT THEY WERE TO BLAME. BUT, THEY LEARNED OTHERWISE.

"It is believed that the tendency to develop abnormal antibodies in type 1 diabetes is, in part, genetically inherited, though the details are not fully understood."

ON SUNDAY, OCTOBER 17th 2010, MY FRIEND AND HER FAMILY WILL BE WALKING WITH THE JDRF (JUVENILE DIABETES REASEARCH FOUNDATION). THIS EVENT IS A FUNDRAISER IN SUPPORT OF FINDING A CURE FOR DIABETES TYPE 1.
