Want to be able to walk your children to their elementary school? Brookhaven Entrance in Indian Trail NC If so, consider Brookhaven, one of Indian Trail's newest neighborhoods. Brookhaven is next door to Antioch Elementary School and extends from Antioch Church Road to Chestnut Lane in Union County. This convenient location is between Matthews and Providence Road near the Mecklenburg County-Union County line. Shopping is available nearby at Plantation Marketplace where the Siskey YMCA is located or at the Promenade at Providence Road and I-485. I-485 provides easy access to other parts of South Charlotte and the airport.

Homes in The Preserve range in price from $499,900 to $559,900. These homes have between 3500 sq.ft. to 4300 sq.ft. New homes offered in the Indian Trail part of Brookhaven range in price from $619,900 to $729,900 and in size from 3100 sq.ft. to 4500 sq.ft.

The Carolina Multiple Listing Service reports 71 home sales in Brookhaven during 2008. This number represents both resales and new construction. The lowest priced sale in the neighborhood was $305,000 and the highest was $959,000. The average sales price was $585,692 and the average size was 3990 sq.ft.

The Siskey YMCA with health and sports programs for every age level is also nearby. Square footage of the MI home ranges from 1920 sf to almost 3000 sf. The average price was $151,200 and average square footage was 1240. The townhomes included a one-car garage.

A series of green spaces with three parks, six playgrounds, and thirteen ponds thread through these neighborhoods.

I Voted Today, Union County NC. So Can You!

I voted today. Union County NC residents, you can vote too! North Carolina allows early voting for everyone. The State Board of Elections calls it No Excuse Absentee voting. Early voting started today and I was voter number 48 this afternoon at my polling place. It was easy and it was fast.

What do you need to know about early voting in Union County?

  • Early voting takes place between October 16th and November 1st.
  • Union County has designated five polling places for early voting: Hemby Bridge Volunteer Fire Department, Stallings Volunteer Fire Department, Wesley Chapel Volunteer Fire Department, the Union County Public Library in Monroe, and the Wingate Community Center.
  • Voting hours are between 10am and 6pm weekdays and between 9am and 1pm on Saturdays.
  • If you are not yet registered to vote, you may register and vote at the same time.

What do newcomers need to know about registering to vote in North Carolina?

  • You must be a US citizen.
  • You must be 18 years of age or older by Nov. 4th.
  • You must be a resident of North Carolina and the county precinct where you want to vote for at least 30 days before the election.
  • You must not be a convicted felon still in custody, on probation, or on parole.

Walkable neighborhoods.Downtown Matthews NC Matthews NC comes to mind when I am asked to name a small town near Charlotte NC that has neighborhoods within walking distance of the downtown area. I define a walkable neighborhood as one that is within one mile of town or community amenities and that has sidewalks or trails that provide a way to reach those destinations. Matthews has a number of community destinations within its downtown area and several walkable neighborhoods near downtown.

What are some downtown Matthews NC amenities?

  • Town hall, library and post office
  • Matthews Community Center offering classes and community theater
  • Matthews Farmers Market
  • Matthews Elementary School
  • Stumptown Park and Bandshell
  • Restaurants and shops
  • Renfrow Hardware, in business for more than 100 years
  • Churches

Is is easy to walk to downtown Matthews NC?

The Town of Matthews has had a long-standing policy of building sidewalks to connect all of the neighborhoods within the town. Most of the older neighborhoods were built without sidewalks internally but because most neighborhoods are a series of cul-de-sacs, neighborhood streets are quiet and easy to walk.

The Four-Mile Creek Greenway will soon be under construction around some of the neighborhoods near downtown Matthews. The Greenway will have over two miles of paved trails and boardwalks with connectors into adjoining neighborhoods. Matthews residents will be able to walk or bicycle around the downtown area when greenway construction is complete.

What are some walkable neighborhoods near downtown Matthews?

  • Old Matthews. Home in Old Matthews NCThe oldest streets in Matthews have a mixture of houses built before the turn of the century and then into the 1940s and 1970s. Recently built homes can also be found in this part of Matthews.

  • Pine Forest and Country Place.Country Place Neighborhood in Matthews NC Pine Forest is a neighborhood of small brick homes built in the early 1970s. These houses range in size from 1000 sq.ft. to 1300 sq.ft. and prices range from $115,000 to $140,000. Country Place, another affordable Matthews neighborhood, was built in the mid- to late-1970s. Country Place homes are 1300 sq.ft. to 1800 sq.ft. in size. Prices in Country Place range from the $130,000s to the $180,000s.

  • Park Square. Park Square is a townhouse development built within the last five years. It includes two-story townhomes as well as live/work lofts above small shops. Park Square Townhomes in Matthews NC These townhomes are approximately 1200 sq.ft. in size and prices are in the $140,000s.

  • Matthews Estates. Matthews Estates is a collection of three neighborhoods built in the mid- to late-1990s. Matthews Estates homes sold in 2008 ranged from 1800 sq.ft. to 3300 sq.ft. and prices ranged from $202,000 to $338,000.

  • Greylock. It is possible to purchase a brand-new home within walking distance of downtown Matthews. Greylock Neighborhood in Matthews NC Greylock, built by Ryan Homes, offers ranches and two-story homes. Some available lots will accommodate basements. Starting prices range from $198,000 to $246,000.
