Records are Made to be Broken? Not these ones!

When it comes to sports, they are! And the average sports fan loves to see it happen! However, when it comes to weather I don't think I am going too far out on a limb when I say no one wants to see this happen. No doubt the inland NW has experienced some rather unusual weather this year and below I have outlined a little summary of it.

Have you experienced weird weather this year where you live?

103: High temperature in Spokane on Aug. 17, a record high
for the date and the hottest day ever, so late in the season.

36: Low temperature June 10, a record low for the date and the latest Spokane has ever had snowfall.

57: Days without measurable rain until Monday night's storms, the sixth-longest dry spell for Spokane.

92.6: Inches of snow last winter, just shy of the all-time high of 93.5 inches in 1949.

Snow in June and triple-digit highs last weekend already mark this year as a record-breaker, and meteorologists say we're dealing with a very extreme weather cycle -- YA THINK? :) Just this year, we have seen extreme cold and heat, drought, record snowfalls, flooding rains - it's all over the board.

The 103-degree high on the 17th in Spokane was not only a record for the date but the first time the city has seen a temperature that high so late in the season. The previous record was 103 degrees on Aug. 10, 1898.

The next day, rain/thunder/lightening storms also broke a 57-day streak with no measurable rainfall, the sixth-longest dry spell in Spokane history.

Even with all this heat, Spokane had one of the worse winters on record as well. We had 92.6 inches of snow, according to the National Weather Service, just shy of the 1949 record of 93.5 inches, and many parts of North Idaho saw record depths.

The Inland Northwest isn't unique in these weather extremes, There was a rare snowfall last winter in Iraq and Hawaii, and just last week nearly 2,000 weather records were broken across the United States!! 2,000!!! Think about that!!!!

Ridpath Hotel - Closes it Doors After Over 100yrs of Service

Since Colonel William Ridpath first opened the doors in the early 1900's, guests have enjoyed the ambiance and service for which The Ridpath is widely known, that is until 5PM Monday evening. This brought an end to the oldest continuously operating full-service hotel in Spokane. With the need of upgrades and repairs to the hotel, coupled with financial losses, the owners decided to close its doors for a major renovation. Throughout the years many people have spent time at the historic hotel. Most notably, Elvis Presley stayed here a couple times back in his prime, and parts of the movie Vision Quest was filmed in the basement of this grand hotel.

LOBBY

Second Floor Lobby

The plan is to revamp the building and reopen the roughly 200-room hotel as a Clarion Suites franchise. However, when the hotel reopens - possibly as soon as Dec. 31 - it may be without its 100+ year old name, visible in large white letters on the roof of the 13-story building.

Lets hope the Ridpath has not closed its doors for the last time. That the name stays and it comes back stronger and more beautiful than ever!

On a side note...The (at least 100yr old) Steinway Grand Piano in the lobby of the Ridpath Hotel was stolen overnight Saturday. A Hotel employee working at the Ridpath told authorities the piano was there when she left around 10 or 11 p.m. Saturday for her dinner break and gone by 2 a.m. Sunday. There is a reward for the recovery of the piano. the piano is estimated to be valued $25,000 or more.

Doggy Swim Days in Spokane!

As many Spokanites know, our community pools are going the way of the Dodo. With the annual repairs and constant upkeep the city has found them too expensive to keep up. The alternative they have developed are random "Spray Pads" for kids in existing parks and two wonderful Water parks on the North and South sides of the city. BethAnn Long details out the South hill Park in her blog http://activerain.com/blogsview/563196/Spokane-WA-South-Hill.

A pretty neat thing the city is doing with the last day of public swim is opening the pools up to our 4 legged friends! That is right the last public swim session of the community pools around the city will be followed by a free Doggy Swim session. Since the pools are getting torn down and filled up the city says there is no reason why the dogs can't have a little fun as well! Below is the schedule of remaining doggy swims at the city pools!

Hillyard and Comstock
People: Aug. 16, 2 to 4 p.m.
Dogs: Aug. 19, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Liberty and Witter
People: Aug. 23, 2 to 4 p.m.
Dogs: Aug. 26, 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

Comstock Park in Spokane

I will be attending the August 19th Doggy Swim with my family and our Black Lab, August 19th at Comstock Pool on the South Hill! Hope to see you out there!
