I was at a Thinkmax event today (a regional RE/MAX event) and one of our speakers was talking about scotomas, also known as blind spots. He had had taken a seminar with Lou Tice of the Pacific Institute. We did 3 great exercises to show us how we can literally not see what is right in front of us. The better you are at what you do, the more blind spots you will have. I am so fascinated by this.
Here is 1 of the exercises we did. Count how many F's are in the following sentence:
FINISHED FILES ARE THE RESULT OF YEARS OF SCIENTIFIC STUDY COMBINED WITH THE EXPERIENCE OF MANY YEARS.
How many did you find? 3...6?
Read it again, this isn't a trick question. I only saw 3 my first time. You will find 6.
The crazy thing is that since we are taught english phonetically we learned OF as a V sound and can totally miss it as an F in the above sentence.
This got me thinking, how many other blind spots have I missed in my life? What about you?
