The number of homeowners facing foreclosure in April fell 2% from 2009, the first annual decline in 5 years, according to RealtyTrac Inc., a foreclosure listing firm in Irvine, Calif.. They also reported that nearly 334,000 households, or one in every 387 homes, received a foreclosure-related notice in April. However, this was down more than 9% from March.

According to the latest real estate industry figures released today, home sales rose more than expected in March. Sales of existing homes rose 6.8% to a seasonally adjusted annual rate of 5.35 million last month, the highest level since December, the National Association of Realtors said Thursday.

Sales are now up 18% from their low in early 2009 thanks to rising sales in every region. Sales increased more than 7% in the Midwest and South, 6.6% in the West and 6% in the Northeast.

The results seem to indicate the housing market is finally stabilizing after a devastating bust. But concerns remain whether the market can stand on its own after federal tax credits expire at the end of this month. Buyers must sign contract offers by April 30 to qualify for these credits.
