We all have probably thought about our well-being and health at some point in in our lives. I know personally, I have questions of my own about health and fitness on a regular basis. The Cumberland Medical Center in
Cumberland County thought about this in 2011 and started offering a free seminar class to answer any questions the people of Crossville might have. Every month, there was a different speaker who came and presented various topics of the body. These speakers came from Cumberland County and were all specialists in specific areas.
The itinerary for the past year will be hard to beat but there are some great speakers lined up for the next year. Some past speakers who came include (but not limited) Dr. John Sherrill and Linda Hassler, who is also a certified diabetes educator and helps assist those struggling with Diabetes in Cumberland Medical Center. Some other awesome speakers who came out include Dr. John Milligan (a general surgeon), Dr. Gary Wilkert (urologist that specializes in men's health), and Dr. Jennifer Tinch (practices occupational and environmental medicine).
These seminars are meant for learning and growing in the areas of personal fitness and health. They were presented to teach about potential health concerns and possible current ones is present. These classes were greatly appreciated and respected, enough to bring them back in 2012. The first class that is being offered in 2012 will be held on January 4th at the Fairfield Glade Wellness Complex. It will be given by Renee Boston who is a physical therapist and certified by the American Physical Therapy Association out of Virginia.
This seminar is a great tool that the Cumberland Medical Center is offering. It is a benefit to go here and learn as much as you can to prevent sickness in the future.

Fairfield Glade Events
As the year is winding down and parties are being planned, Fairfield Glade is still alive and well with Fairfield Glade events planned through New Year's Eve. One party in particular that I want to emphasize on is the actual New Year's Eve party planned by the Moonlighters Dance Club. It will take place on December 31st at the Fairfield Glade Conference Center. Everyone is welcome to come out and dance the night away. It will go literally all night; 8:30p.m. to 12:30 a.m. If you plan on attending, there a couple of things that are asked from you. If you are a Fairfield Glade member, the cost is $30 per couple and $40 per couple if you are a guest. Also, each person coming is asked to bring some fort of appetizer and anything else you enjoy eating or drinking. Little snacks will be provided for you. There will also be a live band performing. They are called The City Lites Band and they will offer music to dance to as well as musical entertainment. This should be a fun event. If you have any questions, please give Pearl McClain a call at 931-456-9298.
Even though this is one event, Fairfield provides many other activities this upcoming year. Nearly every weekday, Fairfield Glade offers trips to many different places around the state of Tennessee. There are trips offered to places like the Great Smoky Mountains National Park, to the Cumberland County Playhouse, to the Grand Ole' Opry, and even to hockey games. There are local things to do as well. Tennis and golf are offered year round. All of the golf clubs have daily specials and menus offered if you are in the mood to dine out. Check out the Fairfield Glade Events page for more events planned through the first few weeks of the year. There is always a lot going on.
Cumberland County, Tennessee is very blessed to have some of the top notch medical service responders. I am always one to brag about how fast these men receive the call and take the challenge of going out and answering the call. Without missing a beat, these firemen and EMTs do an outstanding job in what they do. Even though they are going out and doing the handy work, there is always someone else that we tend to forget about--the dispatcher.
One of the men I go to church with, Marty Davenport, is one of these people. He is one of about 25 dispatchers at the Cumberland County Emergency Communication Center who take every phone call imaginable and pages these situations out accordingly. I am referring specifically to Marty Davenport because he received an outstanding award. He was chosen as 'Dispatcher of the Year" for the 2011 year. Some qualifications of this award are that of the following: one must have a gentle and kind character when taking calls, one must attend work on a normal basis and not miss excessively, and one must show a positive attitude at work. Marty was chosen for this award by his peers at work.
When asked about how he felt about the award, Marty replied, "I was shocked. There are a whole lot more people in that place that deserve it ten times more than I do." If you can not tell already, Marty is a very humble person and he deserved it more than anyone I know of. Marty also replied with, "I get my patience from my mom and my hard work habits from my dad. I go into work, knowing there is a job to be done, and do it to the best of my abilities." Not only is Marty a dispatcher at work but he is also the TAC Dispatcher. This means, he corresponds with the FBI. It is definitely not an easy task but he does it flawlessly.
Marty Davenport is a resident in Crossville, Tennessee and has been here for about 10 years. His father, Glen Davenport, was born and raised here years ago as a kid. He attends church at Cumberland Cove Baptist, where his father, Glen, preaches and mother, Helen Davenport, both attend. Marty has a wife and two grown kids. Not only is Marty a great dispatcher but he is also a volunteer fireman and his son, Karl, just graduated from fire school. I am proud of Marty and his accomplishment. He is a hard worker and our county sure is lucky to have him serving on a regular basis.
