Today is the first day of school for my 11 year old son. He is my youngest and off to his first day of Middle School he went this morning. Last year the bus picked him up at the end of our driveway, this year he had to walk two blocks to the bus stop and catch the bus on a very busy street with a lot of traffic and no side walk. He also has to cross that street to get on the bus. Here are a few safety tips to keep your children safe this school year.
Remind your child to stand back from the road and wait for the bus to stop and the flashing red lights go on and the stop sign arm come out and traffic to stop before crossing the street.
As the weather gets cooler and the daylight hours get shorter, so too does visibility get worse. Be sure your child wears brightly colored clothing and some reflector tape might be a good idea to improve visability.
Remind your child about talking to strangers, or accepting rides from strangers. In Middle School my child no longer catches the bus in front of our house, he is on a busy roadway. Today, I walked him to the bus stop, but he's already told me he won't want me to walk him there every day. If your child has to wait for the bus on a busy road way he or she should wait for the bus, if someone stops and offers him or her a ride to school or home be sure they know to say NO. The bus driver will become accustomed to picking up a child at that stop, and may worry if your child isn't there (if they are there every day). Unfortunately, we live in a corrupt and unfair society and gone are the days that our children can expect safety in their own neighborhoods. So, we have to teach our children be aware and be vigilant of their own safety when we aren't around.
Once your pride and joy is off to school and you leave for work be mindful of other children and school buses. Watch for the flashing lights and drive slowly through school zones. And, watch for children in the streets.
It's really important that your child start the day off with a nutricious breakfast. Ask your child what they like to eat and take them shopping with you and pick out some good breakfast foods together. Liam likes Eggo Waffles, Jimmy Dean Breakfast Sandwiches and Toaster Struedel bacon or sausage and egg variety. He doesn't like cereal (except oatmeal when it's cold out). A good breakfast is the key to a good start to the day.
Check your child's schedule to see when they have lunch. An afternoon snack may be needed to keep the brain cells working in the afternoon. Liam has lunch in 4th period, which is 11:00 am. I packed a granola bar for a snack for this afternoon when he's in World Cultures or Art he may be feeling a bit tired.
When does your child get home from school? What arrangements have you made for after school care. At 11 I think my child isn't mature enough to be home alone for long periods of time, but that's my child it may not be yours. I get him off to school in the morning and my other half meets him at the bus stop after school. Some couples aren't as lucky as we are to be able to do that. Be sure a key is kept in a safe place. A key safe may be in order with an easy to remember combination. Make sure child knows not to answer the door unless he or she is expecting someone and when answering the phone they should never let on that they are home alone to a stranger. "My Mom (or Dad) can't come to the phone right now, can I take a message and have her call you back" is a perfectly acceptable answer. My oldest son used to say his Mom was in the shower, that works too.

Glen Burnie, Anne Arundel County, Maryland - Market Update for the Week Ending August 22, 2009
The market has been seeing a welcome increase in sales and settlements however this week the sales are only slightly higher than last weeks marked decrease despite record low interest rates and improvements in the stock market it isn't as swift as we would like to see. The welcome news this week for many sellers (and agents) was the increase in prices in many areas of Maryland. People are preparing for the kids to return to school and take in the last great events of summer. The number of new listings has remained stable we are seeing a slight increase in the number of homes going under contract and settling. I'm surprised I'm not seeing more individuals making the decision to buy with so many great deals available. Summer moves along too quickly and people will be on the move before the kids go back to school. Now with the economic stimulus changes (up to $8000 in tax credits) and low interest rates it will be interesting to see how this all changes. Overall, there has never been a better time to buy, than right now.
These figures are taken directly from our MRIS system and are believed to be accurate.
Glen Burnie, MD
New Listings 26(decrease of 4 from last week)
Under Contract 27 (increase of 6 from last week)
Settled Sales 11 (increase of 6 from last week)
Anne Arundel County
New Listings 175(decrease 28 from last week)
Under Contract 153 (increase 20 over last week)
Settled Sales 79 (decrease of 27 over last week)
Glen Burnie offers many affordable housing opportunities for those relocating to Ft. Meade and Annapolis. Glen Burnie is located north on 97 from rt 50 or north on Rt. 2 from Annapolis Naval Academy and east along 32 and north on 97 from Ft. Meade.
