Jeff & Patrice Wishmyer

This week on Signal 8-31-09

We welcome Tom McCullough as the new SMMHS Principal. We would also like to say thank you to Eddie Gravitte for leadership to this point and work to help make SMMHS a reality. SMMHS is off to a great year with a great staff, faculty, student body and parental support. I would like to acknowledge that parents make all the difference in public education.

The SMMHS Varsity Football is now 2-0 after their win against East Hamilton HS. They will play their first away game this Friday September 4 against Lookout Valley at 7 p.m.

The Lone Oak Community Center will be hosting their monthly Country Breakfast this Saturday September 5, 7:30 A.M to 10 a.m. $6 donation requested and everyone is welcome to come and enjoy the good food and fellowship.

Get in line early for the Annual Labor Day Barbecue brought to you by the Signal Mountain Lions will be September 7. It will be a day filled with food, fun, crafts and fellowship. Kids Sight First will be screening children all day. There will also be one lucky winner of the brand new Ford sedan. Tickets are selling fast, get your winning ticket today at Signal Mountain Pharmacy.

Jeff and I attended the county commission meeting on Thursday to hear the debate over the proposed sale of Signal Mountain Middle School property. I would encourage everyone to take time to see government in action. Our elected officials put their pants on "one leg at a time" just like we do and unfortunately this human side does get in the way of good judgement. Just my opinion!

Chattanooga State is hosting an exhibit spotlighting Jewish history in Tennessee in the August R. Kolwyck Library. “Bagels & Barbecue: The Jewish Experience in Tennessee” documents the history of Jewish immigration to Tennessee. This exhibit began Aug. 10 and will continue through Sept. 16.

Remember to shop Signal Mountain! MBA meeting this Thursday morning at Sweet Gipsy Bakeshop Cafe, remember to send your events and announcements to: pwishmyer@realtycenter.com.

Global warming has missed us!

It has been snowing off and on for days now. I checked the temperature here on Signal Mountain and it is colder than son's home in WV! On Signal they will close the "W" road when icy and send all the morning traffic down the front of the mountain.

After all it is winter and the snow and ice creates a great landscape.

I am going to get a picture of the "W" road and post it. I grabbed this small bit of info on the road from a sigmtn.com, "This road, which carries traffic up the eastern bluff of Walden's Ridge, is named for the three switchbacks that form the shape of a "W" at the top of the ridge. It was constructed in 1890 to replace the old "corduroy road" used by early settlers and by both armies during the Civil War." Travelling is a treat and believe it or not this road demands a certain etiquitte so traffic wil flow up and down.

This Old House - Signal Mountain, TN

One day in the middle of the summer of 2005, Patrice and I were driving back to Maryland from visiting our son Josh in the Air Force. Somehow we knew that we would make a move south. Little did we know that Chattanooga and more specifically Signal Mountain would be our destination.

6 springs come out of the ground in the front right corner.Painted house this past winter

Because I moved here first while our home in Maryland went on the market, most of our time was spent going back and forth. Before our home search began, we found an older home that we fell in love with. The possibilities we were now faced with became a hobby. Red Oak floors, plaster walls and ceilings, mountain stone and craftsmanship that was unique to the time period.

With each demolition we started we uncovered surprises ...some good, some challenging. We will add from time to time...feel free to share your remodeling experiences!

Since this picture, we have painted and repaired the outside. It is now a shade of yellow/gold with all the shutters removed and trim painted white.

When you look on a map of Signal Mountain, TN in the Old Towne area, our home is at the epicenter. This is interesting because of the 6 springs that originate in the lower right of our property behind the hedges. From here they form a stream that runs into Shoal Creek and eventually into the Tennessee River.
