USDA rural development

PURPOSE OF THE PROGRAM

To provide direct loan funds to low income applicants who do not qualify for conventional financing.

RD is committed to helping New Hampshire residents achieve the American dream of home ownership and to ensure that every New Hampshire resident has access to safe, affordable housing. More than $44.1 million in loans and grants helped to purchase, repair and construct housing for homeowners and individuals in need of rental units. Two hundred twenty five loans totaling $34.2 million were made to individuals and families to purchase a new home. $677,569 was obligated in the form of loans and grants for repair of existing homes. A $1,000,000 loan was made to construct 30 units of family rental housing in Jaffrey, NH and another $200,000 to make repairs to 16 units of elderly housing in Canterbury, NH. Residents of RD's rental properties received almost $8 million in rental assistance to ensure that rents stayed at no more than 30% of a resident's income.

Local band form Maine bursts back on the music scene. Check out the Rustic Overtones if you have a chance.

Recently reunited, The Rustic Overtones released this song and video.  I think it is a good look into how great the music scene in Maine has become.  I have been listening to, and following the Rustic Overtones for almost 15 years now.  By far, this is one of their greatest songs released recently.

Come check out the music scene in Maine, I'm sure you enjoy what the local artists have to offer!

Rustic Overtones started out in the early 1990s as a three-piece cover band known as Aces Wild with Dave Gutter, Jon Roods, and then-drummer and close friend Matthew Esty, playing small bars. This lineup produced the very rare "Smile" album. The Rustic Overtones gained popularity during the mid to late 1990s in the Portland, Maine music scene, although they had many self-financed tours throughout the country, mostly the northeastern states. After the release of their 1998 album Rooms by the Hour, major record label Arista signed the band spurred on by then president Clive Davis. The signing lead to "Hardest Way Possible," a song from "Rooms By The Hour" being featured on the soundtrack to the Rob Schneider film The Animal. Arista hired legendary producer Tony Visconti to produce what became the 2001 release, Viva Nueva!. However, after disagreements with the label, and a shakeup at Arista that saw their primary suppoter, Clive Davis, depart, the record deal fell through. They were shortly afterwards picked up by Tommy Boy, and released Viva Nueva! in 2001. The album featured guest appearances by Funkmaster Flex, Imogen Heap and David Bowie. However, Tommy Boy dissolved shortly after the release of the album, once again leaving the Overtones without a record label. The disappointment of two major record deals falling through proved too much for the band members, and they went their separate ways in 2002. Their "final" performance was a three-hour show at the State Theatre on May 11th, 2002.

Red Sox vs. Yankees: If you live in New Hampshire, or a Sox fan, You'll appreciate this one!

Sports are a mojor part of my life. Anyone who reads my blogs knows and understands that. Well, grwoing up in New Hampshire, a grew to be a Red Sox fan. No, I din not become a fan when the started having better teams and won world series. I can prove it. I have my ticket stub from 1986, my first Red Sox game my dad ever took me to.

So, it's only fitting, being a fan, the season right around the corner. I have to poke fun at all of the Yankees fans. Can't wait for the season to start. My first game of the season is right around the corner, Wednesday April 8th, vs. Tampa Bay Rays!

Red Sox vs. Yankees

On the first day of school a first grade teacher explains to her class that she is a Yankees fan. She asks her students to raise their hands if they, too, are Yankees fans.

Wanting to impress their teacher, everyone in the class raises their hand except one little girl.

The teacher looks at the girl with surprise and says, "Janie, why didn't you raise your hand?"

"Because I'm not a Yankees fan," she replied.

The teacher, still shocked, asked, "Well, if you are not a Yankees fan, then who are you a fan of?"

"I am a Red Sox fan, and proud of it," Janie replied.

The teacher could not believe her ears. "Janie, why pray tell are you a Red Sox fan?"

"Because my mom is a Red Sox fan, and my dad is Red Sox fan, so I'm a Red Sox fan too!"

"Well," said the teacher in a obviously annoyed tone, "that is no reason for you to be a Red Sox fan. You don't have to be just like your parents all of the time. What if your mom were an idiot and your dad were a moron, what would you be then?"

"Then," Janie smiled, "I'd be a Yankees fan."

New Hampshire Maple season is upon us. Try this great recipe out.

Each year, the New Hampshire maple industry produces close to 90,000 gallons of maple syrup. Maple sugaring time in New Hampshire runs from mid-February to mid-April.

As the frozen sap in the maple tree thaws, it begins to move and build up pressure within the tree. When the internal pressure reaches a certain point, sap will flow from any fresh wound in the tree. Freezing nights and warm sunny days create the pressure needed for a good sap Harvest.

In late February, New Hampshire maple producers tap their sugar maples by drilling a small hole in the trunk and inserting a spout. A bucket or plastic tubing is fastened to the spout and the crystal clear sap drips from the tree. It is then collected and transported to the sugar house where it is boiled down in an evaporator over a blazing hot fire. As the steam rises from the evaporator pans, the sap becomes more concentrated until it finally reaches the proper density to be classified as syrup. It is then drawn from the evaporator, filtered, graded and bottled. It takes approximately forty gallons of sap to make one gallon of pure maple syrup.

Below is a great recipe I found courtesy of The NH Maple producers Assoc.

Maple Barbecue Sauce:

2 Tbsp strong mustard

2 Tbsp lemon juice

1 clove fresh garlic, crushed

½ tsp cracked black pepper

½ tsp dry thyme leaves, crushed

1/3 c NH maple syrup

1/3 cup cooking oil

Whisk ingredients together. Use as a basting sauce for chicken, pork chops or spare ribs. Makes about ¾ cup of sauce, enough for 4 servings.
