Dear Cindy,
Can you believe this year is almost over? I'm so happy that once again, you'll be able to attend the event of the season with that wonderful Prince Charming. And just so you know, I've worked out this year's schedule so much better.
None of that carriages turning into pumpkins stuff when the clock strikes midnight this time around. This year, you and your glass slippers can dance the night away. And when you are ready to leave, you, and your handsome date, will have your choice of carriages to whisk you off safe and sound.
Now, let's start with your free carriage option, shall we? Free is always good, right?
Miller Lite Free Rides:
Miller Lite will provide free rides between 7pm Dec. 31st through 2am Jan. 1st. They will have two private shuttle buses operating on a looped route between Lincoln Park and the South Loop. The shuttles have pre-determined stops at various bars and restaurants in several neighborhoods on the route.
The shuttles will also stop at several CTA train stations, as well as both the Ogilvie Transit Center and Union Stations for Metra riders. The routes are subject to change, but you can get updated route and schedule info by calling 800-FREE-RIDES or by visiting millerlitefreerides.com.
Ah, but let's say you miss the last free carriage or it drops you off a bit too far away from your destination. Well fear not, my dear. Option number two is only a penny.
CTA Penny Rides:
As in years past, the Chicago Transit Authority, (CTA), will provide their Penny Ride program to New Year's revelers. Riders can travel on any CTA bus or train for one penny from 10pm Dec. 31st through 4am Jan. 1st.
That's it, only a penny. Oh, and by the way...that will have to be a real penny. The CTA is advising riders not to use their fare card. If they do, they'll end up paying full fare and the CTA is not offering refunds for any full fares paid during the Penny Ride program hours. If you want more details, you can call 888-YOUR-CTA or visit transitchicago.com.
Well dear, that's it for now. Have a wonderful, safe and happy New Year's Eve.
Signed,
Your Fairy Godmother

Memo To All Elves
From the Desk of Kris Kringle
North Pole Division
Santa Claus Enterprises
Well, the busiest week of the year is here again. Where did the year go, right? Once again, you've outdone yourselves. Before I embark on my most important mission, I want to take a moment and thank all of you. I'm truly grateful for all of hard work you've done this year. I could not do this without all of our elf teams, here at headquarters and those in our divisions worldwide.
As we head into this final stretch, our North Pole division is shifting it's duties from toy production to loading up the sleigh and getting the reindeer prepared. Part of our team in the Chicagoland area is working with the Chicago Children's Theatre, during it's run of Goodnight Moon at the Biograph Theatre. The Children's Theatre has partnered with the Pajama Program, a 501(c)3 not-for-profit organization to collect pajamas and books through December 31st.
In addition to leaving gifts at children's homes, I intend to make a donation to the Pajama Program. Since my calendar is pretty full this week, I'll take advantage of the online donation option. The Pajama Program is based in New York and has chapters throughout the US, Canada and Puerto Rico so I encourage other elf divisions to make donations in their communities as well. Donations are accepted year-round.
Once again, thank you for all your help throughout the year. It is indeed an honor to work with all of you.
Merry Christmas, and to all, a good night!
Kris

With a few brief exceptions, much of December's weather has felt more like early spring than like the start of winter. But never fear. At some point Chicago's famous "hawk" will be flying in for it's annual appearance. Many families do cannot afford warm coats to make it through winter's harsh weather. This Wednesday, you have a chance to make a difference in someone's life.
On Wednesday, December 21st, The Salvation Army and NBC5, Chicago's local NBC affiliate, are sponsoring a coat drive at the NBC Studios, 401 North Michigan Avenue, Michigan Avenue at the Chicago River. You can donate a new or gently used winter coat beginning at the early morning newscast at 4:30am, on through the morning, and ending at 12:30pm after the midday newscast.

So far, Chicago has received the gift of fairly nice December weather. Perfect for getting out to enjoy all that the city has to offer. While you are enjoying yourself this weekend, you also have an opportunity to help others.
Friday, December 16th
Toys for Tots at the Four Seasons Hotel
Friday is the final day of the Four Season's Hotel's Toys For Tots Drive during Afternoon Tea. Children will be treated to complimentary afternoon teas with the donation of a toy. They'll also have their selection of ham & cheese and peanut butter & jelly sandwiches, fruit kabobs, holiday cookies, gummy bears and a choice of milk or hot chocolate. (Children's Tea $15, or free with toy donation to the hotel's Toys for Tots drive.)
Cost for adults is $38. Adult Tea features a selection of teas, tea sandwiches, breads, "holiday inspired pastries," and fresh baked scones with whipped Devonshire cream and preserves. Seatings begin at 3pm. For reservations, call 312-649-2358.
Friday, December 16th through Sunday, December 18th
White Sox Coat Drive
The White Sox will be hosting a coat drive this weekend at their Chicago Sports Depot, located on 35th street just outside gate 5 of U.S. Cellular Field. New or gently-used coats, gloves, scarves, (as well as non-perishable, canned food items), will be accepted at the Chicago Sports Depot, Friday from 11am to 7pm. Weekend hours are Saturday, 11am to 5pm and Sunday, 11am to 3pm. Visitors can take pictures with Santa on Saturday from 12:30 to 2:30.
Anyone who donates winter-wear will receive a $10 discount on outerwear purchases at the Chicago Sports Depot. Those who donate food items will receive a holiday gift bag. All donations will benefit local shelters and non-profit agencies. Free parking will be provided in parking lot B.
Feed Your Tummy, Support High School Sports
When your tummy calls for attention tomorrow afternoon, head over to the Potbelly's at Dearborn and Harrison. I'm definitely a Potbelly's fan, but that's not the (only) reason I'm suggesting them to satisfy your Friday afternoon munchies. Tomorrow, Friday, December 9th, from 3-5pm, this South Loop location is donating 25% of it's sales to benefit the Jones High School baseball team. So head over to Potbelly's at 542 S. Dearborn tomorrow afternoon. Feed your tummy and help support neighborhood student athletes.
