CR-V comes to Alliston

CR-V comes to Alliston!

The first 2012 Honda CR-V rolled off Honda Canada Manufacturing (HCM) the production line in Alliston on January 23rd, 2012.

This fourth generation CR-V, considered a global model, is produced in 10 countries and sold in over 160 countries around the world.

The CR-V is the fourth distinct model to be manufactured in the Alliston Honda facilities, joining the Civic, the MDX and the ZDX. Production is back to peak levels, about 1,600 vehicles per day between the two assembly plants as the Alliston plant seems to have recovered from slow downs due to parts shortages as a result of two natural disasters in 2011. HCM employs approximately 4,200 people in Alliston and is responsible for many more local jobs in secondary and tertiary automotive industries as well as logistics and other spin-off industries.

This news bodes well for local jobs and housing markets!

The Joy of Books

Do you love to read a book? ... for me, it's the imagination, the escape, the feel of the book, the sense of turning the pages, and so much more.

Kudos to Kobo, Kindle, Playbook and IPad, Audio Books and other technological advances that have made the reading more "convenient", and there is a place for them in this transient and ever short of time world we live in. However, for me, there is nothing like getting comfortable and curling up with a good book. Almost always, if I have read the book first, the movie tends to be a little bit of a disappointment.

I was tutoring a student in Grade Twelve math last night, and we were talking off-topic about the advances in curriculum over the years when he postulated to me that, perhaps some day in the future, learning would become obsolete and information and knowledge could be programmed into young minds... I thought about this and told him, that I thought the real value in learning was not really the information imbedded, but creating the desire for knowledge and teaching us how to acquire it... the journey more so than the result.

For me, it is very similar with a good book. It definitely is the message behind this short stop motion video filmed in TYPE, a Toronto Bookstore in October 2011. The director and his crew took over the bookstore from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 a.m. for 4 days to shoot this imaginative video that seems to be going "viral" on YOUTUBE.

Russel Ray Photos January contest

A Picture is worth a thousand words... we have all heard that. But a good picture is worth so much more...

A picture captures a moment in time. Yet, when we look back at it, it often stirs much more than the basic memory banks... it can evoke strong feelings and revive emotions long forgotten.

A picture of an important moment can be shared with those not present and in doing so, can share this moment with someone not present. A picture can be a way to connect people who, at the moment, are not...

Unfortunately if not captured properly and if one does not possess the tools and/or skills to correct an improperly taken picture, then the moment that was, can be lost as time fades our memories...

We went to a Children's Christmas Party last December, perhaps the last one Alec will see with the wonderment of a child who still believes...

He met his "cousin" (actually his third cousin) Michala for the very first time in his life, and was thrilled to find that he had a relative close to his own age. They became instantaneous and fast friends... My son, who would not sing in the choir being assembled, was somehow dragged up on stage by his cousin.

I tried to capture the moment with a point and shoot, but somehow messed it up.
Michala with Alec on Stage

Alec is in the blue and white striped shirt and his cousin is to his left. This picture still brings fond memories of this moment to Helen and I, but it fails to capture what I saw. I now realize the opportunity missed.

Perhaps this picture can be improved, even a little. This is a lower resolution copy of the original I have. I am entering it in the January contest that Eric Cooper announced on behalf of Russel Ray. They are offering a prize of a full copy of Corel PaintShop Pro X4. Perhaps I should be grateful that I did not delete these pictures immediately. If you would like to enter, check out the original contest announcement.

Mr. D. Home Repairs

If you live in any of the villages of New Tecumseth, Adjala-Tosorontio, or Essa, and you are looking for a "handy man" to complete a Plumbing, Drywall, Painting, Ceramic Tile, Garden, Deck, Shed, Kitchen, Basement, Bathroom, Garage, Fencing or other Home or Commercial Renovation, contact Larry Dubeau before you decide who to use.

I met Larry several years ago while he was doing commercial renovations for a company I was working with. I have had him work on investment property and my home.

I have found that he has saved my money on several occasions by suggesting repairs in a manner I had not considered. He is prompt, competitive, and competent. He completes a project within the time frame he quotes, and that is very important to me.

If you are looking for someone to complete a small or large home or commercial renovation in Angus, Alliston, Beeton, Tottenham, Tecumseth Pines, Everett, Rosemont, or elsewhere in South Simcoe, call Larry at 905.936.5445 or e-mail him at ajdubeau@symatico.ca.

If you are talking with him, tell him that I recommended him to you!
