Charlestown, founded originally by British colonists, began as an independent neighborhood. British colonists founded Charlestown across the Shawmut Peninsula's harbor before Boston was established. In 1775, the neighborhood was severely damaged subsequent to the Battle of Bunker Hill. Charlestown was built again in the 19th century after the revolution. The neighborhood became one of the centers for maritime and transport industry.
The population of Charlestown increased three fold to over 28000 in the four decades between 1830 and 1870. Migrants from Ireland were a majority (about a quarter of the population) amongst those who migrated to Charlestown in 1865. In 1874 the neighborhood was annexed to Boston. Today, Charlestown is known for its remarkably prosperous industrial buildings and historic residences.
During the years after the revolution, Charlestown denizens made up for the lost time. New industrial and housing areas were built in the neighborhood. Warren Tavern, built in 1780, is the oldest building existing in Charlestown. The neighborhood is dotted with striking collection of Federal style Boston homes built by skilled personnel. Post revolutionary developments fueled the upward surge in the residential homes in Charlestown.
The grand street-car line built in early 1901 transformed the neighborhood's façade. In addition, constructing massive structure of Sullivan Square and ‘El' attracted more people in Charlestown, thus rousing the industrial expansions in the area. The construction of the Navy Yard gave employment opportunity to over 47,000 workers during the Second World War. However, the neighborhood also witnessed severe unemployment after the end of the Second World War. Charlestown real estate was at its lowest ebb during the post war era. But, with the re-development of Navy Yard and ripping of the ‘El', the town witnessed more positive changes in the last 20 years,
Charlestown real estate witnessed many upheavals during early 1960s, as BRA (Boston Redevelopment Authority) commenced plans to dismantle and re-construct 60% of houses in Charlestown. However, in 1963, a majority of Charlestown residents opposed BRA's redevelopment plans by a massive majority. BRA had to succumb to the opinion of the majority in 1965 and reduced dismantling by 11%, which included elimination of the rail tracks as well.
At present, Charlestown residences are a mix of middle- and upper middle-class houses, with numerous housing projects. The neighborhood also has huge working-class Irish-Americans with predominant Irish-American culture. Charlestown boosted the Boston real estates in late 1990s as large number of prominent personalities tied-up with the community.
As a result, Charlestown real estates saw brisk business during the period and real estate agents and real estate companies made a killing from this trend. Real estate listing in the Boston real estates especially in Charlestown's "home for sale", "houses for sale", "apartments for sale", "condos for sale", and "luxury homes for sale" segments burgeoned.
The historical prominence of Charlestown further enhanced its realty market. Most of the town's historical interests are discernible by the Freedom Trail of Boston, which ends at Bunker Hill Monument that commemorates the well-known Battle of Bunker Hill. Apart from this, the US Navy's oldest commissioned ship is docked in the Navy Yard of Charlestown.
The town's public schools are operated by Boston Public Schools. The famous Clarence R. Edwards Middle School, Charlestown High School and Harvard/Kent Elementary School provide the best education in the neighborhood. The main campus of the well-known Bunker Hill Community College is also in Charlestown.
