Bryan Texas Summer Reading Program

Cindy Seaton

This is where our local tax dollars are best spent! The Summer Reading Program gets children off the hot Texas streets into the public libraries. Families track how much they read during a two month period and turn in a reading card for prizes. The public library holds great events that cause our community to come together.

Our Bryan Library staff is gracious and so helpful. The Children Librarian/Super Hero, known as "Miss Bobbie" in our home, is the most encouraging woman I've ever met. And her creativity is endless. With limited city budgets, she can make something fabulous out of nothing. You must go to meet her when you move to town. In fact, on my relocation tours through the city of Bryan, the public library is one of the first places I take people.

Encourage the youth in your life to enroll in the Bryan Library's fantastic program. Here are the Deeeeeets:

DR SUESS' GUIDE TO HOMEBUYING:

Old fish

The choices in buying a home have been likened to a Dr. Suess book. To rehab(ilitate) or start from the ground up? Color palettes that reflect who I am, or hues that highlight who I want to be? The possibilities can be overwhelming.

To ease the decision-making process, consider your family's culture...will refurbishing an older home be an adventure or an awful experience? Will our relationship need rehab after the house?

If you're sitting on the fence over the issue, consider this: go green. Rehabilitating a home is excellent use of existing space. There's no better environmentally friendly and economically satisfying construction than to breathe new life into a historic home. The older homes have more character and maturer trees than new homes. It is nice to walk on to a lot that is 60% shaded by older oaks.

We exercise good stewardship when we utilize what we have rather than recreating the wheel. Recycling a home preserves a legacy, a way of life for those who have gone before us. It keeps a piece of history in our midst.

If you have thoughts on purchasing a historic home in the Brazos Valley, post a comment below.
