The Curb Market has been operating in Downtown Hendersonville since 1924.
Locally Grown - Locally Made! One of My favorite places!

The Curb Market began as a group of farmers that brought their extra produce to town for the "city folk" to enjoy. It quickly became a popular place, expanding to include milk, eggs, butter, fresh fruit and vegetables, plants, jellies and backed goods and hand made mountain crafts. I have met some of the women that work their "booth" they are "the real south". The items for sale at the Curb Market have to be grown or produced in Henderson County. The same folks have run their booths for generations.
Just some of the items they sell = all produced in Henderson County.
Daylilies, Hostas, Dahlias, Sunflowers and too many varieties of native plants....
Fresh Vidalia jelly, chow chow, blackberry jam, pickles of every variety , etc
Quilts, blown glass, dried floral arrangements, wreaths, handmade rugs, soaps
This unique place is located on Church St. parallel to Main St. in Historic Downtown Hendersonville.
Open Tues, Thurs, Sat.
I love to go down on a Sat morning and be the first one to get to my favorite booth. A lady and man that can, bake, and grow some amazing stuff. I can frequently get fresh dahlias, HUGE flowers, fresh cut that morning. She also will have some great berries, maybe only a couple pints, but they are the best. Her husband will be out in the parking lot with a pickup full of fresh sweet corn. Then just for kicks I'll have to pick up a loaf of zucchini bread.
My office just happens to be just a few blocks from the Curb Market. It sure can be easy to run in on a Tues morning before staff meeting and grab some fresh muffins, biscuits or cinnamon rolls. I always have to buy more since my colleagues can get jealous.
So, don't miss a visit to a Henderson County tradition. Locally grown, locally made!
Mast General Store - in business since 1883.

The first Mast General store was opened in 1883 in Valle Crucis, NC. Folks used to play bottle cap checkers next to the pot-bellied stove. It has now grown to 9 locations throughout the south. Hendersonville, NC is lucky to have this fantastic store. It is like walking back in time. You see all the old mercantile items, lye soap, jellies, jams and cast iron skillets. Then venture on to the toys - old fashioned toys, with no batteries allowed. These are a favorite of my kids - perfect stocking stuffers. Old marbles, airplanes, puzzles, and rubber band guns are just a few of the items in the toy dept. Then you won't believe the candies. Old fashioned candies, like Teaberry gum, Necco wafers, mary janes, zagnuts and bottle caps. Then on to the camping, hiking and outdoor wear. I love the Life is Good T-Shirts, the Columbia jackets and the Azalea footwear.
The Mast Store on Main Street in Hendersonville was built in 1905. It has housed a variety of past retailers including the Maxwell Fancy Grocery Store, Freeze Drug Store, Potts 5¢ & 10¢, and a ladies' dress shop. Other occupants included The Woodsmen of the World, a benevolent secret society which held its meetings in the store in the 1920s.
The following description is from their website. www.mastgeneralstore.com
Today, all of Mast Store's departments are showcased in a beautifully restored building complete with an ornate pressed-tin ceiling, oiled floors, and a "grand staircase" leading to the second floor. Mercantile features oil lamps by Lamplight Farms, goat's milk soap, and cast iron cookware from Lodge; fashion includes brand names like Woolrich, Northern Isles, Miss Erika, and Flyshacker Flannels; the outdoor and shoe department features items from Royal Robbins, Mountain Hardwear, MSR, Columbia, Patagonia, Asolo, and Clarks. You'll also find barrels full of your favorite candies - from orange slices to wax bottles and extra large jaw breakers to Mary Janes - available to mix and match by the pound.

McFarlan's Bakery Downtown Hendersonville since 1930
A fixture in Downtown Hendersonville, this bakery has been a favorite for visitors and locals for decades. I have loved this bakery since I moved here in the 80's. I have raised my children here and they LOVE this bakery. My son has grown up on smiley face cookies and my daughter on chocolate eclairs. They have been scarfing them down since they were able to walk. They are now 15 and 13 and still love them. My favorite - when I choose to indulge are the powdered sugar cake donuts! Another family favorite - you can custom order, so for every birthday I can remember - we order a dozen devils food cupcakes with cream cheese icing.
The counter at McFarlan's is overflowing with wonderful baked goods.
It is narrow, and overflowing with every variety of "old timey" donuts, cookies, pastries, loaves, cakes, pies, and rolls. Walk in and inhale the intoxicating aroma of sugar, cinnamon, icing, glaze, meringue, dough of every strain, and more sugar. The customers crowd the long counter as the employees try to fill their orders as quickly as possible. The selection is overwhelming and designed to satisfy all your daily nutritional needs: Donuts, sticky buns, turnovers, and strudels for breakfast; cookies, eclairs, cream puffs, and "covered wagons" for an afternoon snack; and pies and cakes for dinner.
