Tuesday Version: Countdown to Opening Day! by Kathryn

Today is Tuesday, August 19...only 3 days until the 2008 Parade of Homes OPENS to the general pubic in the Moongate subdivision in Felida Washington! So it's rush time for the builders, contractors and designers...and the committee too! Everyone is working like mad, adrenalin pumping, to make this Parade fantastic!

We thought it might be fun to let you see how the last minute details are coming along. Thank goodness the temps have dropped from the triple digits, giving workers a break from the heat! This is the latest video of the Parade, will try to get a few more in PRIOR to opening day, enjoy:

Being a member of the BIA (Building Industry Association) has been such a great learning experience and opportunity too! Check out the Events Calendar for August at the BIA, lots of things to get done before opening day!

Vancouver Washington Day Trips: Our Trip to the Seattle Aquarium July 2008

Vancouver Washington Day Trips:
Our trip to the Seattle WA Aquarium July 2008

One of the benefits of living in Vancouver Washington (which is just north of Portland Oregon) is the easy access to vacation destinations in the Pacific Northwest, the USA and the rest of the world! One of our family’s favorite day trips is to Seattle Washington, at about 3 hours away by private automobile on I-5 (about 3.5 hours by Amtrak Cascades). With our in-town and work calendar reasonably clear we set out on a sunny summer weekend morning to see the Seattle Aquarium, Elliot Bay waterfront dining and other sights.

Starting out we follow the Columbia River until Longview / Kelso, where the Columbia turns West again on towards the Pacific. This is also the point in the journey where we first encounter the visible influence of Mt. Rainier by way of the Cowlitz River. Our views of the mighty mountain are a sliver of the top here in Clark County however, as we move northward on our trip, Mt. Rainier will become ever more visible and impressive!

While on our northward leg of the trip we expect to slow as we get closer to Tacoma, and sure enough we encountered a slowing of traffic just south of Ft. Lewis, as the WSDOT had the right lane of traffic closed. As we Some of the Bikers on the Rally For the Troops V July 2008 Tacoma Washingtoncame to the “scene” what we saw were hundreds of Bikers making the U-Turn for their “Rally For the Troops.” What a sight with almost every bike sporting one or more US Flags!

The bikers left the freeway at the Fife exit, and we continued uneventfully and finally arrived at the Seattle waterfront. Now the task of finding parking began! With Kathryn’s uncanny good luck with finding spots, we found a metered spot available right on Alaskan Way (free meters on Sunday), very close to the cruise ship dock, and a short-block from the Aquarium at Pier 59. To be sure this was our best luck at weekend parking in this part of Seattle!

We grabbed at bite at Fisherman’s eating outdoors. We then walked over to the Aquarium. Pulling out our handy-dandy coupon from the View of the Seattle Aquarium Pier 59 Seattle Washington July 2008Entertainment Book (Seattle Edition!) one of the adult admissions was free (saved us $15). At the counter we saw another perhaps better deal for admission when you purchase a Seattle CityPass for $44, which gives you one admission to each of 5 venues including the Aquarium – what a great deal! We’ll be purchasing the Seattle Pass next time to be sure.

The living exhibits and other displays at the Aquarium do a great job ofStatue of the Explorer Christopher Columbus being viewed by one of our modern day explorers in Seattle Washington July 2008 explaining the sea-life in the Puget Sound and Pacific Ocean waters off-shore. We very much enjoyed the hands-on tide-pool displays as well, where the water is authentically COLD (you can touch the creatures with one instantly-numbed finger!) with many interesting tide-pool creatures inhabiting them. If you like visits to Aquariums, we recommend you put this one on your list!

Vancouver Washington Home Owner Tips: Turf-bits for your Lawn

Vancouver Washington Home Ownership Tips: Turf-bits about Lawns

Believe it or not, the green, grassy lawns that are common in Vancouver came from the English aristocracy in the mid-18th century, which were the only home-owners of the time to be able to both afford the expanse of land required and the manual labor required to maintain them.

According to American-Lawns and the History of Lawns in America mechanical mowing came about early in the 19th century but it wasn’t until Elwood McGuire of Indiana in 1870 devised a machine that could be made for the masses. By 1885 50,000 lawnmowers a year were being built!

One of the challenges we face growing a grass-lawn in Vancouver Washington and the Pacific Northwest are the 3 or 4 months of very dry conditions we have in the summer. Without regular watering the grass will brown up and go dormant until the rains return in the Fall. With proper practices a home-owner can minimize the amount of water required to keep a lawn green. You may research those better practices at American-Lawns.com or, discuss them with your landscape maintenance professional.

If you’ve got any tips to pass along on keeping your lawn healthy and green in Vancouver Washington please feel free to comment here!

Exploring Vancouver Washington

This is part 3 of the series on Vancouver Washington. John and I took these pictures of the area, and along with this calendar, is a good start on our local area. We love the Farmer's Market, the produce is so fresh and local.

About the pictures: The first is of Maryhill apples, the second is flags and banners marking the entrance to the Farmer's Market and the last picture was taken when we made a stop at the Frenchman's Bar Area along the Columbia River. It's a public park right along the water with lots of parking and picnic areas.
