Locally grown produce—the movement of the future

The futuristic farmer will conserve water and land.
The higher quality produce, the healthy better taste and the reduced cost of transportation contribute to the movement toward locally grown produce. The advantages of locally grown fruits and vegetables has become increasingly popular with not only the farmers markets but also with mainstream stores such as Whole Foods and Wal-Mart. Restaurants and caterers are also joining the movement to purchase the local produce. Thus allowing them to serve fresh healthy foods that are at peak of freshness and flavor.
We are excited about the latest hydroponic entrepreneurial project that our son is now undertaking!! Josh is am engineering graduate student at U of A in Tucson, AZ. He is currently finishing his masters in engineering. His new company, “50-Mile Farms”, aims to produce high quality lettuce virtually anywhere and assure that it doesn't have to be transported more than 50 miles.
He has designed a four-stage modular hydroponic lettuce factory that can turn tiny sprouts into big leafy green heads of Bibb lettuce in 36 days. Hydroponics is a method for growing crops in a water solution containing nutrients. In the hydroponics methods the nutrients needed for the plant's growth is supplied to the plant directly. This gives the grower complete control over the crops’ nutritional needs allowing for maximum growth and production.
Greenhouse produce has many advantages:
  • The system has only 10 percent of the water loss of dirt-farming lettuce
  • No pesticides or herbicides are used
  • Less acreage/space is required to produce a greater volume of produce - a single acre of hydroponic space could produce 2.5 million heads of lettuce per year
  • Production is year-round
  • The greenhouse can be constructed and lettuce can be grown almost anywhere and the results are high-quality, fresh produce
  • The plants grown hydroponically are typically healthier and larger than the conventional plants
  • Because the products are grown in a controlled indoor environment protected from insects and weather they grow virtually flaw-free and not only look better but are healthier and taste better

Hydroponics techniques are increasingly finding favor. Consumer are becoming more aware of quality differences, especially the high quality produce - the future is green.

Congratulations to Joshua on his latest venture!

A Cloudy day in Phoenix Arizona!

Winter has finally arrived. At least the Arizona attempt at winter. The skies were gray and we actually had some light rain showers. This type of inclement weather is a treat for those of us who dwell here in the Sonoran Desert year round. Ok, to all of you who choose to live in areas with four seasons, you might think we are getting excited about nothing. But, with more than 300 bright sunny generally warm days a year here in the Valley of the Sun, we ‘desert rats' enjoy a gloomy day once in a while. This allows us to justify donning our winter clothes and lighting a fire in the fireplace. Of course, if it remains cloudy and overcast more than a couple of days in a row we will all be complaining about the unusual extended gray cold weather spell!! After all, one of the primary reasons we live here is the warm and sunny weather. We are definitely spoiled. . . enjoy it now for tomorrow may be bright and sunny again :-) HAPPY WINTER!

There must be a silver lining. . .

The news media continues to print negative reports about the current real estate situation. There has to be a ‘silver lining' somewhere. Yes, the inventory is higher than normal, there are many foreclosures and short sales affecting the value of homes in just about all communities and the overall economy is weak. But, there are some positives as well. The interest rates remain extremely low with a potential to be reduced to 4.5%, there are some excellent opportunities for first time home buyers with FHA loans, many potential home buyers can now actually qualify and afford to purchase a property and there is a sizable inventory from which to select from . Real estate is still a good investment as over the long term home prices will increase.

This is a ‘buyers market' - potential home buyers should be motivate get off the fence and take advantage of the current real estate opportunities.

I wonder what would happen if we all gave thanks for everything we have,
instead of worrying about what we don't have.
