The Big, Bright Light Show in Downtown Rochester is an annual event where the local businesses get together to create a spectacular holiday light display which covers Main Street from the South Bridge to University. The display consists of holiday LED lights every four inches and the storefronts are already preparing to shine brightly again. The display kicks off Monday, December 1 at 6PM. The Big, Bright Light Show starts with the official lighting at 7 p.m. Monday, Dec. 1 during the 36th Annual Lagniappe event. Lights will be on every night from 6 p.m. to midnight through Jan. 4, 2009. The light show also features the return of the Snowflake Spectacular on Water Street, the Dancing Tree of Lights on East University Drive and Candy Cane Lane on Walnut Blvd., for a grand total of over one million lights.
The spectacular lights are not limited to the downtown area. Many residences create fabulous light shows of their own. First enjoy a drive or walk through downtown Rochester and then drive throughout some of the suburbs of Rochester Hills. There is one home in particular that starts hanging lights and decorating months in advance. Just drive down Teinkein going east from Main street and you cannot miss it on the south side of the road.
Don't miss the 2008 parade which will be held on Sunday, December 7th, at 1:45 PM, and includes dignitaries, bands, children's group, community organizations and local businesses. The parade is also broadcast live on WXYZ-TV Channel 7.

Grosse Ile is the largest island on the Detroit River. Located south of Detroit, Grosse Ile is home to about 11,000 people who enjoy the easy access to the water for boating or the abundance of nature with the superior habitats for birds, mammals, and fish. According to the United States Census Bureau, the township of Grosse Ile has a total area of 18.3 square miles, of which 9.6 square miles of it (52.6%) is land and 8.7 square miles of it (47.4%) is water.
Grosse Ile is actually composed of twelve islands although the community is most often identified with the "main island" (which residents simply refer to as "The Island"). Grosse Ile's "main island" is technically two islands created by the Thorofare Canal, which runs on a diagonal course from east to west. In all, more than a dozen islands comprise Grosse Ile Township. The uninhabited islands include Calf, Celeron (Tawas), Sugar, Round, Dynamite (Powder House), Fox and Stony. Together they are known as the "conservation cresent." Stony and Celeron are owned by the Michigan Department of Natural Resources. The other islands are privately owned.
To reach the island, visitors can travel by land, air, and sea. To drive, there are two bridges-the north end bridge is the privately owned Grosse Ile Toll Bridge and the other is the Wayne County Bridge (a.k.a. free bridge). Grosse Ile is considered one of the best locations along the Detroit River to observe commercial shipping and pleasure boating. Lake freighters and ocean going ships regularly pass near the east side of the island where the main channel of the Detroit River runs between Grosse Ile and Canada.
Homes on the island range from the affordable to the spectacular. Many of the more elegant homes overlook the Detroit River on the Canadian side. While there is on-going new construction, there are many older homes including five homes built 1840s to 1860s which are in the National Historic District on East River at Parkway. A dozen 1920s era homes are listed on the Michigan Register of Historic Places. With the numerous canals and marinas, this is a community that definitely attracts those who love boating. John and Tammy Arcori host an annual Halloween party for all of the neighborhood in the Clear Creek Subdivision of Rochester Hills. They rent a popcorn machine, a cotton candy machine and pour carmel over wedges of apples--the most popular from the video below. They also make their own candied apples and hand wrap them before the party. Of course, Halloween wouldn't be complete without donuts and cider (both hot and cold). The only thing missing is the inflatable play station for the kids to jump and the tent they usually put up -- the wind was too high to make them safe. After the fire truck comes and the everyone follows it for a parade around the neighborhood, they host a huge dinner for family and friends - with a record turn out of around 200. They also collect can goods for Gleaner's Food Bank.
Clear Creek Subdivision is just off Tenkein and right next to the new Stoney Creek High School. It is clearly a family neighborhood with beautiful newer homes, sidewalks, street lights and very near the Paint Creek Trail. Rochester Hills is a community geared to creating great community events that attract people from other cities including the upcoming "city of lights" where all the stores in the Rochester decorate the front of the stores. There are also many events hosted by the city and the Village of Rochester Hills. I shot a video for the mall at the Village of Rochester Hills about a week ago for their "Pumpkin Patch" local event. After investigating the different video hosts, I decided the quality was best on Mixpo so subscribed to this great service. Not only is the quality the best, but the SEO and statistical tracking is unbeatable. I finally found my way around the editing and overlays etc. and posted it last night about 8:30PM EST. I received a call around 9AM this morning from the Village of Rochester Hills saying they saw it, thought it was a well done video and wanted to thank me for covering their event. They also asked if I would like to receive notifications of future events. I was so excited that I received the call and by how quick it was!!
I really have Brad Andersohn to thank for much of this success. He has been so generous in getting me through the learning curve in creating videos and not letting me get stopped by my frustration. His new title is "Community Evangelist" and this is what he did on one of our calls to create the full possibility of what Localism is all about. I really got the vision of what's possible with promoting local events in the communities where I sell real estate. This is the ultimate way to network that provides great value to local businesses and creates me as the "go-to" person when it comes to getting the word out. I have a major event scheduled to cover Nov. 14 and I was coaching their new PR person on what I am doing to create an online presence in my marketing strategies. I have had a few different professions: I have been a corporate trainer in the hospitality industry. I have worked with Human Resources in charge of staffing and recruiting. I have been a registration fulfillment manager and seminar leader for Landmark Education. Now, I am a Realtor and it is my favorite career so far because I love what I do!. There are many things I like about it: always creating new ways to develop my business and marketing strategies for myself and my listings; the flexibility of my schedule; I love seeing all the different homes and interiors; I like driving and being in different places during the day; I am my own boss--to name a few. Mostly, I love it because I know I make a difference in my interactions with people and the service I provide. I have made a difference with people relocating from another state, with first time buyers, and with investors. My sister was a highly successful Realtor in the Kalamazoo area and inspired me to choose this career. We had so much to talk about in sharing the same profession. She passed away unexpectedly a couple of years ago and at her funeral there were over 500 people attending--a majority of them were from her Real Estate profession--most were current and past clients. The stories they shared about the difference she made in helping them find their home are still an inspiration to me.
When I find a client and we just know it is a fit to work together (it is really hard for me not to like a client), I go out of my way to find them a home that they can enjoy--night after night--or day after day--and hopefully year after year. After a long day, I just want to come home, put my feet up, watch TV or surf the INTERNET--and it is important that I can relax there, be with my friends and family and put my hair up (in other words, not be concerned about looking good). I want to assist others in finding that space for themselves.
My office is located in Birmingham, Michigan and from there I go to Royal Oak where I am the featured agent in ActiveRain. I am often in Troy and Sterling Heights (always stopping at Whole Foods) on my way to show or list homes. I leased a home in Berkely for a couple from out of town and when they purchased a home, I helped them find a great one in Oxford. A friend purchased a condo with me in Rochester (selling a home in Centerline) and I love going on hikes on the Paint Creek Trail when I visit. I met the sweetest neighbor when I sold a home in Clawson--they had lived in their home for over 50 years and she always brought me something to drink or eat at every open house I did. I love Oakland County -- where I also service Ferndale, Beverly Hills, Bloomfield Hills, Madison Heights and Farmington Hills. A local business found my name on a Relocation website and asked me to prepare material on the local communities to entice a prospective recruit from Texas to accept a position--I found them the perfect home in West Bloomfield with a nature preserve for their backyard. My newest listing is in Rochester Hills.
I don't limit myself to Oakland County as I have also sold homes in Wayne County as well. A good friend I know from graduate school wanted to live in a particular subdivision in Northville so I sent 300 letters and found someone who was just thinking of listing their home and they sold it to my friend without listing it. My friend lived in Allen Park and I sold their home and they referred me to their neighbor. I sold their home in 4 days and helped them find a new home on Grosse Ile. My brother referred someone from the Kalamazoo area and I had so much fun finding the family of six a home in Novi. Referrals are the highest compliment and this family told a young couple buying their first home about me and I sold them one in Plymouth Township. There was another relocation from Arizona (they had never lived in Michigan) and we looked in all the neighborhoods until we found a home with a pool and double lot in Livonia.
Each search for a home is a story, the special memory of a person or family that has found a place where they can relax and call Home--as you can see, I really enjoy what I do.
