Newport in Carteret County, NC gets $500,000 to create a New Park.
Site is next to middle school in Newport
NEWPORT - Carteret County earned a state grant that will move a much anticipated park project for the Newport area toward construction.
The grant will help fund the development of new park and recreation facilities on 11 acres adjacent to Newport Middle School.
Carteret County must contribute matching funds.
This is great news.
The county submitted its application for the PARTF grant in January after both the Carteret County Board of Commissioners and the Carteret County Board of Education had approved a Memorandum of Understanding for use of the unused 11 acres next to the school for a district park that would serve county residents as well as school students.
If all goes as planned the park will include six lighted tennis courts, a 5,000-square-foot recreation center, youth soccer fields, outdoor basketball court, restroom and concession facility, a playground, parking area and walking trail.
Improvements planned by the county to the existing facilities include landscaping, lighting and expansion of the walking trails.

Winchell Competes in World Championship Golf Tourney by Josie Mullins, Newport VoiceNewport may boast the next Tiger Woods in 6-year-old Hayden Winchell. Hayden says his dad, Dan, got him started playing golf and now he plays a lot. During the summer he can be found at the Golf Farm or on a golf course honing his skills. "He has a lot of natural ability," says Winchell's coach, Nina Foust. "You just want to guide him so his grip and posture doesn't get off. What we really need to work on now is his short game. That's what really hurt him at Pinehurst." Hayden was sick during the tournament with an ear infection but the up and coming star fought his way through to land him a world ranking. Hayden played nine holes a day with two other competitors. In his age group there were 84 kids competing and all together 35 countries were represented. The U.S. Kids Golf World Championship enjoyed its seventh year of competition this year and had more than 950 international children, ages 4-12, compete. This is the largest golf tournament for children ages 4-12.
