The first major change to St. Patrick's Day is it has been moved up to March 14th. It is normally celebrated on the 17th. However due to an edict from a local bishop that decreed festivities should not be held on the Monday of the holy week, the date was changed. So if you are planning a trip here for the parade, you may want to make note of the change. The change has been seen as a good thing locally. With the holiday celebration moved to Friday, people will have more time to spend here for the festivities.
Last year barricades were used along the parade route to keep crowds out of the streets. And since they worked well, more barricades will be in place this year. Spectators are also no longer allowed to set up tents, tables, or bring coolers out until 6am the day of the parade.
Another change, the New York Fire Department will not be allowed to march in this years parade. Last year, there was some trouble with firefighters throwing beads into the crowds and drinking while marching. And a few even got belligerent to local police when they intervened. However, firefighters will still attend the parade. Next year, they will be allowed to apply to march in the parade.
There have also been talks about charging permits for spectators planning on watching from public squares. They want to try to stop overcrowding of the public squares, thus reducing arguments among the spectators. The idea is to sell 20 ft by 20 ft spots for $25.They may also allow fewer people into the parade and they may push the parade back to later in the day. However, these have only been proposed.
These proposed changes have enraged some local Irish-Catholic's that have been attending the parade for years. Many people have family traditions and family spots. These changes could ruin all those. I will keep you updated on these proposed changes.
Changes have been proposed for rental properties in Savannah. Alderman Tony Thomas wants a license to be imposed on rental properties. The city can then regulate the maintenance on these rental properties. If a property is not properly maintained, the city can revoke the rental license. The city has dealt with many complaints from homeowners about the conditions of rental properties in their area. If there are no visible signs of code violations on the exterior, the city can not enter a rental property.
Landlords are not happy about these proposed changes. They say it's just extra paperwork and extra money. The extra cost will trickle down to those lower income people that are renting from them. They say the city has enough power to regulate rental property. The only thing needed is more inspectors.
