Deepwells Mansion has hosted a Holiday Tea, a Decorator Showhouse and a Holiday Boutique, so I was quite surprised to hear that this historic mansion located in St. James is now hosting the Acoustic Long Island showcase. Due to the number of people, reaching Cool Beanz Cafe's capacity of 40 (where the showcase started in October 2005), the showcase relocated to Deepwells in April of 2007. Deepwells is owned by Suffolk County.
Deepwells was built in 1845 for Joel Smith, a descendant of Smithtown founder Richard "Bull" Smith. It became the summer home for New York City Mayor William Gaynor in 1905, and in 1924 for Winthrop Taylor, a founder of the Village of Head of the Harbor. In 1989 Suffolk County bought the property, and 14 of the original 44 acres, for $1.8 million.
Acoustic Long Island is a weekly gathering of singer-songwriters. Acts from all over the country have been coming to play, and the showcase tops iTunes' list of acoustic podcasts.
The County does not charge for the use of the mansion and admission to Acoustic Long Island is free. The showcase is held on Wednesdays at 8:00 p.m. at Deepwells Mansion, 497 Route 25A, St. James, New York. You can get more information on the showcase at www.acousticlongisland.com.

The Heritage Center is located within the property of the North Shore Heritage Park in Mount Sinai, also known as "the wedge". The park is bordered by Route 25A, Mount Sinai-Coram Road, and County Road 83. This community center has become a focal point of the park.
The Heritage Center is a 3,400-square-foot structure designed to resemble a barn, which is fitting given all the farmland that was in this area. It has a large meeting room, lobby area, a small kitchen area, indoor bathrooms and bathrooms that are accessible from the outside, if you are patronizing the park.
One of the interesting things about this building is that it is a Green Building made with high energy efficient components. It has structurally insulated panels, which help maintain temperature and make the building very sound. In addition, the building has solar panels on the southern exposure, as well as heat exchanges.
Future plans for the center include offering yoga and exercise classes, live theater performances at the park's amphitheater and more. The Trust is also working on getting a license to show motion pictures for a movie night.
The Heritage Center is available for rent for parties, sports nights, preschool graduations and other events. For more information on the Heritage Trust or the new Heritage Center call (631) 509-0882.
