Memorial Day Celebration at Florida Retirement Community Lake Ashton

With Labor Day around the corner, it's a great time to remember what being an American means. I love how our community celebrates our great country's holidays and I am looking forward to Labor Day. At Lake Ashton, our community really came together to celebrate Lake Ashton's Veterans' Memorial.

Our community's celebration was complete. There was a presentation of the Honor Guard by a few of Lake Ashton's veterans. The United States Flag was hoisted into the air by two USN Veterans. At first, the flag went to full mast, and then, they lowered it to half staff in observance of Memorial Day.

A member of Lake Ashton Activities sang a beautiful rendition of The Star Spangled Banner and then the ceremony proceeded into Lake Ashton's Ballroom. Terri Mattocks did a beautiful job presenting the invocation. Lee Till, the guest speaker spoke about Memorial Day; past, present and future.

Each man and woman was recognized as they heard their branch song on the piano. God Bless America and I'm Proud to be an American were played with a slideshow. We all shared a toast and moment of silence in honor of the absent companions and "Missing Men Table." Frank Ota, a USMC, explained the significance of the table and the history of TAPS.

I think it is so great that a community like Lake Ashton can gather together as a family and recognize the people that have fought for our country. This is the first time I have heard of neighbors recognizing each other like this. I was also very glad to hear of a community administration that cares enough about its residents to put on an event. If I didn't live in a Florida retirement community, would Memorial Day have been celebrated as a community like this?

God Bless America.

Lake Ashton raises approx $15,000 for charity

FOR IMMEDIATE REALEASE

Polk County, FL - Lake Ashton, a Florida retirement community in Lake Wales held an event on Saturday, May 10th, 2008 that grossed just under $15,000 for a charity that has been serving the community for more than 50 years.

Achievement Academy is a non-profit organization that helps and supports individuals with developmental disorders. The organization was started in 1955 as part of United Cerebral Palsy, but has since expanded to include anybody with developmental delay. Achievement Academy has locations in Bartow, Lakeland and Winter Haven. And because it has delivered services to individuals in Polk County for 50 years, Lake Ashton collected a passionate and hard working group to support the cause and plan the event.

Academy's First Annual Country-Western Round-up Fundraiser was a western-themed BBQ hosted by Lake Aston to create awareness and collect donations for Achievement Academy. The event featured the Treasurer of the Achievement Academy Board, John Scott, who represented the organization, spoke at the event, and answered questions throughout the evening.

The event also features The Lake Ashton Shufflin' Squares, a group of talented square dancers and their Presidents, Freda and Clyde Kitts. The Shuffin' Squares were among square dancers from Polk County to provide entertainment at the Academy's First Annual Country-Western Round-up Fundraiser.

"The Shufflin' Squares were pleased and proud to be a part of the fund-raising event for the Achievement Academy, " says Clyde.

Festivities started with a Bar-B-Q meal served under the spreading oaks of the Higgenbotham Ranch, then moved to the bard for line and square dancing. Shufflin' Squares demonstrated moves of modern western dancing and taught the more novice dancers some beginner steps. Most of the guests participated in the easy square dances, the Virginia Reel, and line dances including the Electric Slide.

Lake Ashton was very happy with the turn out and the success of the fundraiser. The Florida Retirement Community plans to make the event an annual event and states that the Academy's Second Annual Country-Western Round-up Fundraiser will be in early May of 2009. Just a congo-line away from the biggest named cruise lines

More and more, active adults over the age of 55 are finding travel and adventure an essential part of retirement in Central Florida. To celebrate their longer and fuller lives, Baby Boomers are just looking to have fun more than anything! And now, with senior discounts and senior-specific lines, cruises have become the preferred way to travel after retirement.

A recent article on Travour.com states this about senior cruises, “These types of cruises are designed keeping in mind the age of its guests and their choices and likings. The most important thing in these cruises is the comfort level. The beds and seating arrangement are highly comfortable and cozy. The cabins have a warm ambience and are spacious enough to make sure that guests have a safe journey.”

With several Florida retirement communities less than an hour’s drive to Port Canaveral, – the second busiest cruise port in the world – CRF Communities is an ideal place to reside for the frequent cruiser. Being just a short drive away, some of CRF Communities’ residents chose to leave earlier to spend a few hours at Port Canaveral’s beaches, restaurants and lounges. After the recreation, these senior travelers board their favorite cruise line and off they go for 3,4, or even 7 days of happy sailing!

Cruise Lines that dock at Port Canaveral include the following:

  • Canaveral
  • Disney
  • Royal Caribbean International
  • Holland America
  • Norwegian Cruise Line

And the following Casino Ships:

  • SunCruz Casinos
  • Sterling Casino Lines

Because of the close proximity to Port Canaveral, residents of CRF Communities can visit the port dozens of times, trying as many of the different cruise lines as they want. However, it is not unusual for a retiree to find their favorite cruise line and travel it up to 4 times a year! These veteran travelers, living in top retirement communities love the relaxed quality of the cruise experience.
