Go Green Knoxville TN Recycling Guide- Part 1- Why Go Green?

Homeowners Guide to Going Greentake care of the earth

All across the world, homeowners are going green.  As with any initiative, going green can range from small simple steps to full house retrofit.  There are many benefits of greening up your living space, including improving the indoor air quality, saving energy, reducing waste, and saving money on energy bills.

When the whole green concept was first introduced many thought it was just a trend, but the research is out and going green is not only healthy but can quantifiably beneficial.  With energy bills on the increase going green can put some green back into your pocket- a trend that everyone should strive to achieve.

So how can going green save you money?  Many green products are designed to be sustainable.  While in some case these products could be initially more expensive they will save money in the long run.  In addition, these green additions could make your home much more valuable in the eyes of potential buyers- possibly giving you as a seller a serious market advantage.

According to the National Association of REALTORS® green housing trends are on the rise and a recent poll shows 8 out of 10 home buyers consider energy efficiency of major importance.

Below are links to some simple and cost effective ways to get you well on your way to going green:

How to Buy a Home in Knoxville TN-Step 2- Determining the Best Knoxville Neighborhood For You

Knoxville Sunsphere

Now that you have armed yourself with the purchasing power of a pre-approval letter from a trusted mortgage professional and know what price range you can qualify for, it is time to start looking for a place to live.  If you are not pre-approved check out the first part of this series: How to Buy a Home in Knoxville TN- Step 1- Secure Your Financing.  However, with so many homes for sale how do you know where to begin?

Narrowing down a place to live can seem overwhelming, especially if you are unfamiliar with the area and relocating to Knoxville TN.  When it comes to finding the perfect place to hang your hat, visit the Knoxville Neighborhood Page for some information about the different Knoxville Neighborhoods

Knoxville TN is quite a diverse area and each subarea has its own distinct feel and it truly has something for everyone.

When it comes to picking out an area you may want to consider these things:

  1. How far is the area from places that you will be frequently traveling, i.e. work, school, church, etc...) and would I be happy with this drive?  As a Knoxville Relocation Realtor® we can easily help you search for homes based on this criterion (like 10 miles or less from your place of employment).
  2. What kind of housing do you prefer?  In Knoxville TN the most common are single family residences (you own the home and all the land), condos (you own the building interior), and a planned unit development or PUD (you own the home as well as a small plot of land (you are responsible for maintaining your portion usually)- the rest of the land in the development is common land).
  3. Differentiate between your wants and your needs.  It is unlikely that you will be able to find EVERYTHING that you want but usually you can find a good balance.  By creating a prioritized list you can save yourself a lot of time as well as be more realistic when you are looking at homes.
  4. Do you require public transportation?  View the Knoxville Transit Association for maps of the Knoxville Transit System.
  5. REALTORS® are unable to comment on location, demographics, crime rates in regards to safety, quality of school zones, etc... if these things are important to you make you do your Buyers due diligence by checking with the local police dept or school system.

One great way to familiarize yourself with the Knoxville Real Estate market is to provide a Realtor® with your search criteria and have them send you listings.  In Knoxville there are areas that have much higher home prices and not everyone can afford all areas.  You may also find that you can get much more for your money by searching in another area.

Ijams Nature Center- Fun Things to do in Knoxville TN

Ijams nature center

Knoxville, TN has had the tendency to attract lots of visitors and tourists who flock to the area to enjoy the magnificent scenery and visit the multitude of area parks including the Great Smoky Mountains- the most visited National Park in the country.

While the Great Smoky Mountains are great and have a lot to offer sometimes I don't feel like battling all the tourists trying to get up there.  Sometimes, I just get the urge to throw the kids in the car and enjoy the great outdoors instead of fighting through traffic.

Ijams Nature Center located in South Knoxville is a great place to visit.

Ijams Nature Center

Inside the visitors center you will find a nature center devoted to education- especially conservation and recycling, fun and interactive nature displays, and even a live animal collection.

The building is built with sustainability in mind and even the bathrooms are environmentally friendly.

Whether you are looking for just a short nature walk or a day of hiking, you can find it at Ijams Nature Center- the trails are well maintained and it is a great place to get your minds off the stresses of everyday life.
