What with the weather, a little travel, and clients, somehow 6 weeks slipped by without our getting out on the water. We didn't even notice how much of a "missing" it was until we got out late yesterday.
We waited until after 5 so the temperature would moderate a bit, and headed off to launch the boat and spend some quality time unwinding and breathing salty Gulf air.
The closest boat ramp to our house is Pioneer Park, also known as the 10th Street ramp. That's a good facility with lots of ramps but it does tend to get busy. The next one is Ken Thompson Park on City Island ... easily twice as far but tending to be a bit more civilized and quiet, and we'll often travel the extra 10 minutes to launch there.
Both of these ramps put you out onto Sarasota Bay, pretty close to the Ringling Causeway (beautiful bridge):

Sometimes we just want to see something different, and yesterday was one of those times. So off we went to launch at Bradenton Beach, just north Sarasota Bay and about 15 miles by car from our house. Beach traffic on weekend days can make this spot pretty busy too, but 5:30 on a Sunday night is no problem.
The ramp is small but nice ... there is a nice anchorage for cruising boats, a beach with pavilions you can reserve for special events ($37.28 for all day -- call 941-742-5974), bathrooms, and so on ...

It's very close to Longboat Pass, a good deep-water gulf access route.

And here's a shot of the bay-side beach and one of the pavilions

Aside from the nice facilities ... and best of all ... is the nearby boating area that is easily reachable from this boat ramp ... a welcome change of scenery from some of the areas we frequent. The town of Cortez, the north end of Longboat Key, Long Beach (known locally as Beer Can Island), sandbars for sunbathing -- all of this are bathed in some of the clearest Gulf water you'll see on this area of the coast.
We took lots of pictures and I'll post some more in the next few blogs ... soon to come!
Not everyone shares our tastes (and that may be a good thing!) but we like the places that look like a postcard from the 1950s. A little rough is okay with us, as long as there's character and history.
This place surely qualifies and you haven't seen Florida until you've had a meal there.

It's the Rod and Reel Restaurant on Anna Maria Island. Google Map
We just love this place. It's off the beaten path but so worth the trip! It sits on top of a fishing pier a couple of hundred feet out over the Gulf of Mexico, with a view of the Skyway bridge and more than a few fisherman out there with their hooks in the water.

The view alone is worth the ride, the food is good ... oh, and save time to drive around Anna Maria Island, which has retained a good bit of its old Florida charm. No vacation is complete if you haven't seen all this. And for the locals ... well, you'll feel like you're on vacation when you go there!
We make sure our out-of-town guests get to the Rod and Reel!

We are boat nuts, but in July in Florida, afternoon is not the time to be out unless you really like being very hot. So we did our Sunday open house and then took the boat out at around 6 pm.
This is a great trick, since on Sunday night most people are headed home when we're headed out, and we have a little more peace and quiet.
Plus the setting sun is usually fantastic. I forgot the camera so these were taken with the Treo built-in. Not the greatest ...

The secret hangout is an area of Big Pass (between Lido Key to the north and Siesta Key to the south) where the shifting sands have made a little low island out in the middle of the pass. You'll find it out near marker 9 ... or is it 11? No matter, you can't miss it -- just go where the other boats are beached. We'll go there and lie in the shallows and let the current sweep our cares away. Paradise!

The outgoing tide was so swift on Sunday evening that there was a group of four who would float by from one end of the island to the other, get out, and walk back to the starting place to do it all over again. It's hard to see in this Treo photo that they are straddling floats and holding beers ... and SMILING.

Add the Sandbar to the list of Things We Love to Do In Sarasota ... the top place on our list of the best places to live.

For many years, Ed Smith Stadium over at 12th and Tuttle has been the spring training home for the Cincinatti Reds. The Reds are leaving us after the 2009 spring training session, and I wasn't really in on that controversy. But now the news is that the 2007 World Champion Boston Red Sox are looking at Sarasota as a new training camp venue, and Sarasota is looking at the Sox: http://www.heraldtribune.com/article/20080603/NEWS/806030314/1661
I'm not a big sports fan but I did go to my first major league baseball game a few weeks ago in Tampa (The Tampa Bay Rays beat the Chicago White Sox, thank you very much) and it was great! I would be delighted to go to spring training games in Sarasota. That declaration probably won't weigh heavily on the City's decision, though.
What the Powers That Be will be considering is whether the presence of the Boston brand will bring dollars to our area -- enough to justify the inevitable expenses. I'm thinking it would sure bring some folks from Massachusetts to buy second homes & retirement homes ... but in what numbers? Do any AR bloggers have first-hand experience with what happens when a high-profile team comes to town for the spring?
This promises to be a hot-button topic in local politics here for a while!
Playing around with posting pictures in the blog for the first time.
Okay, so this wasn’t today. We took a few days off and drove about an hour south to the ever-exotic Boca Grande, where we did … nothing. Well, we did look at some fine real estate. A beautiful place but not cheap! Outside those fine homes: some of the nicest boats I’ve ever seen.

And we spent some time sitting on a sandbar, sipping bubbly water. That’s our boat in the first photo, a Simmons Sea Skiff 20, for those boat nuts out there.

Okay, enough of that. Back on your heads!
