SEO - More Than An Appearance On Page One

In the illustration below, from a presentation I did for a small group of agents, I cited the need for what I called "multiple points of entry", which introduced a concept of triangulated blogs and websites.

Once any one of the sites has a strong position, you can use it to promote others in your group of sites. I separate my sites between areas of focus, ie. web design, photography and web marketing. My primary site has content for all three. If I'm struggling to find a topic for one, I can usually get comfortable with a different topic. In real estate, that may be a little harder, but you can establish a personal presence where you blog about related or even unrelated topics and still give support to your primary focus with properly anchored back-links.

Orange County Photography by Dave Keys | Vimeo vs. Youtube Redux

I decided to press the limits of youtube to see just how good the quality is. Why? The "upper limits" of Youtube compared to the free version of Vimeo allow for much larger file uploads. (up to 2GB per video). I produced an HD version of a montage of photos from a recent trip to Zion National Park and the Grand Canyon. At 1.98GB the file just slipped in under the max limit for uploads. Rendered in full HD 1440 x 1080 at full quality H.264, The video took a long time to upload and several hours to fully render on Youtube servers. (Youtube publishes a low quality rendering pretty fast but the full quality version takes appreciably longer (a few hours in this case).

The results are quite satisfactory, though I suspect a 2GB upload on a (paid) Vimeo Plus account would look even better. Even paid Vimeo accounts ($59/yr) have the same commercial restrictions.

Free Youtube allows a luxury only provided by paid Vimeo as well; you can embed Youtube videos in HD.

Just Call Me - Right Now

If you can get in (by invitation only but you can request an invite), Google voice has some slick features including custom widgets that answer with a greeting specific to that widget. If you're running multiple departments or just providing multiple services or running multiple campaigns, this feature is quite useful.

You can even have a widget go directly to a voice message (like those cheesy audio tours)

Voicemail automatically transcribes to text (not perfect, but you can usually get what's meant right away) and sends it to SMS and Email as you choose.

What else is Google good at? Oh yes, SPAM!

You can SPAM label callers! Their calls go to the screaming monkeys forever.

You can be a little gentler too. Lets say you have that certain someone who always calls on your dime (your time) just to chat.

Caller management allows you to send them along to your voicemail. How nice for everyone!

Orange County Web Designers have to be marketers or they're just making electronic postcards that sit in the dark.

Orange County Web Design | Branding Your Name on Google

Can you brand your name along with your product on Google in a geographic context? Yes you can!

A while back, in June, I decided to shift my focus to branding my name and associating it with my products. The name part was pretty quick- I have one of those less common last names so Dave Keys got to a place of domination with relatively moderate effort. What surprised me today is that I achieved page one of Google for a much broader and more competitive search term: Orange County Photography.

I'm not by any means the best or even the 10th or 20th... best photographer in Orange County. I only do photography as an occasional gig. But I do know how to optimize my websites.

Now as to the much greater challenge, Orange County Web Design. I'm buried deeper than I like to admit but the photography placement which will likely bounce around for a while is encouraging.

Oh yeah, here's the proof/evidence.

Headed to Weathertop Again

In my ramp-up to a July 9th trip to the Grand Canyon, a guided tour with geology professors, I'm climbing one of the hills here in Murrieta. I have to do all I can to be ready for those hikes at 8,000 feet!

Our trip will be on the cooler north side of the canyon. I've never seen it before except from the air. It only took 51 years!
