Today, May 1, 2011, under sunny blue skies, the 22nd Annual Times Colonist 10K race took place in our beautiful city. Over 12,000 runners started, with 10,205 finishing the course.
The winner, Willy Kimosop of Kenya finished with a time of 30.22, and our own Olympian Simon Whitfield of Victoria, came a close second with a time of 30.25.

What a great way to start off the glorious month of May!

With the Royal Wedding looming fast I was wondering if my "mug" is worth anything! Ha! Ha!
My Mum loves the Royal Family and has kept these mugs and a little book of matches!! for me and my sisters since the wedding of Diana and Charles in 1981. Recently I lined them up and not really being a "Collector" I wondered aloud if they might be worth "cashing in".
Horrors!! "Never!! Keep them for your own offspring!! " Ah well, maybe in another 25 years I might make some money on my mug during the lulls in the real estate market!
So ... last Wednesday I managed to arrange 2 days away from real estate to go skiing with my wife and son. Of course we were all really looking forward to this little break, but little did we know what was in store for us.
Mt. Washington is a 4 hour drive from Victoria up the island to Courtney - it was a beautiful day, sunny but cool. I had checked the weather and knew it wasn't going to be perfect, perhaps even a little extra snow. Our first day was great - we had fun with our 6 year old and my 16 year old nephew. Conditions were perfect, we had a good few hours of skiing and my son was even warned by the ski patrol to "SLOW DOWN" on the bunny slopes -and since it was only his second time skiing we thought that was hilarious.

Fun on the slopes of Mt. Washington
Next morning ...

Talk about the North Pole!! How can I ski down this big hill Dad?
We awoke to huge piles of snow outside our condo ...
We were warned that we might not be able to get out that day - and we hadn't brought any extra food! The condo was rented and didn't have any provisions, so we knew somehow we had to get off the mountain that day.

Thank goodness for underground parking!!
By mid afternoon we had managed to dig a pathway out of the garage, and arrived back in Victoria by 8 pm.
There was a lesson to be learned that day - in future, take chains when driving to the North Pole, take extra food, and believe the weather forecast!
But I must admit, we had a super first day, and as our son loved it so much I will definitely make time to do it again before summer!!
If you like antiques, then Victoria is the place to search for them, but unfortunately times "they are a-changing".
From connoisseurs to new collectors, if you’re looking for treasures from the past you are still likely to find them within some of Victoria’s best antique shops.

Located on Fort Street, and often nicknamed Antique Row, these antique stores and even an Antiques and Collectibles Mall, contain many different types of collectibles, from furniture, fine art, china, glass, crystal, silver and bric-a-brac items to vintage clothing.
The majestic Fairmont Empress hotel, built in 1908 and housing many beautiful antique items, is a great place to begin if you're doing a "walking tour" of Victoria.

Although times are changing, there are still many beautiful items available for collectors of all tastes. Asian collectors and art lovers especially are finding bargains.
I have always been interested in antiques as my parents were antique dealers in both the UK and Canada before they retired, but I must say that now I’m a real estate agent I find that my clients all seem to want brand new, clean lines, with easy to buy and discard items.
Most people just don’t want the antique look anymore, which is sad, even though I also now prefer clean, modern lines too.
