ENCINITAS ARTS ALIVE BANNERS 2010 UNVEILED TOMORROW
Join the Downtown Encinitas Mainstreet Association tomorrow, February 20, 2010, for the unveiling of the Arts Alive Banner Project at the old Cabo Grill site on La Costa Avenue and Coast Highway 101. This year marks the 11th year of the banners. Originally there was 25-30 pieces of art and has grown to over 100 over the past years.
These banners are created by local artists and hung on lampposts on Coast Highway 101 from Leucadia down to Cardiff until May. Each year these banners are auctioned off in May and the proceeds are split 50/50 between the artist and the three presenting groups which are the 101 Artists Colony, Cardiff 101 Chamber of Commerce and Leucadia 101 Mainstreet. This year the auction will be held on May 23rd at the Cardiff Town Center. The minimum bid last year was $150 each. They are one of a kind original pieces of art done by amazing local talent.
Take a look at the amazing talent from last years banners.
Photos will be published after the unveiling! Hope to see you there!
The headlines of the newspapers and news websites say it all.....49 of the 50 states have been hit with snow. It's even snowing in Rome! Our state is full of snow in the mountains but here at the coast it is just another day of Paradise!
I woke up to a beautiful day of sunshine, blue skies and 70 degree weather here in Encinitas. What better day then to head to the beach with my husband for a nice long walk. We parked on Coast Hwy and walked across to the campgrounds and enjoyed the smells of Bull Taco grilling their famous tacos for hungry beachgoers. It was tough, but we looked the other way and headed down the stairs to the beach.
Walking past Swami's, our famous surfbreak, the waves were 8-10 feet at the face and full of local surfers looking to catch the perfect wave. The sets just kept coming and feeding the frenzy of the men and women out there waiting their turns to ride the winter waves.

We continued on to Moonlight Beach where there were hundreds of families enjoying their Valentine's day at the beach. Some of the braver children were frolicking in the chilly 56 degree waves with their parent looking on from the sidelines. There were children "sledding" down the sand piles on their boogie boards and the more talented kids were standing on their surfboards and surfing the sand hills to the bottom.

We decided to head back amongst the couples walking hand in hand, picking up souvenier shells and beach rocks as a momento of their special day together. Couples were perched on the rocks eating picnic lunches and gazing out at the waves. A family was pointing out to the horizon so my husband and I stopped to see what they were looking at. It was a pod of whales heading south to warmer waters out past the surfers. It is amazing to see the giant mammals gliding so gracefully through the water and exerting spouts of water 5 feet high for all to enjoy.
Well, the 3 mile walk made us hungry as we headed back up the stairs past lifeguard station 19 and up towards Bull Taco. The taco shop was crowded as always but well worth the wait. Halibut street tacos done to perfection with a delicious lemonade to wash it down.

Encinitas, CA - A Great Place to Live!!

Did I hear the alert correctly on the television today? The emergency broadcast system sent an alert over the the television stating there is a TORNADO WATCH today in ENCINITAS and North San Diego county!
Can it be true?
My daughter asked me, "Mom, what do we do if a tornado comes?" I paused and thought for a moment.....
I'm sure if she asked me about an earthquake I could answer her question, however, she already knows what to do in case of an earthquake because they teach them in school. Afterall, earthquakes are expected in Southern California, but a TORNADO?!
So, I decided to do a little research on Tornado Survival Tips and this is what I came up with:

Oh, by the way, it never manifested into a tornado, but, now I can say I know what to do if a tornado ever strikes Southern California!!
