On Monday, I was fortunate enough to be the guest of Brian Linkhart, Professor at Colorado College, as he and his students continued their yearly documentation of the "Flammulated Owls". These tiny owls are only about 6 inches tall at maturity, and live deep in the heart of old growth forests from southern Canada to Mexico, where they migrate in the winter. Professor Linkhart has been studying these owls for 28 years, in an effort to learn more about these little known owls of the forest.
Rarely seen, they make their nests in woodpecker holes high in the trees, and prefer the old growth forests (where trees are 100-200 years old or more), of Ponderosa Pine and Douglas Fir. The eggs of these owls incubate for about 22 days before hatching. The female remains with her owlets for about five weeks, while the male hunts moths and other insects with which to feed his family.
Professor Linkhart tells me that the Flammulated (Greek for 'flame shaped') Owl is considered 'sensitive', as opposed to threatened or endangered, but more study is needed to determine the effects of deforestation on these tiny, docile creatures.
We traveled along a rough dirt road deep into the forest around the Manitou Experimental Station north of Woodland Park, Colorado. Quietly, we approached an old aspen known to house an owl family. The photos that follow document the process of the study.
A camera set on a very long pole is raised about 35 feet up to 'peep' into the woodpecker hole to see if the owls are in residence, (they are). A net is raised to cover the hole and prevent the female from taking flight.

Professor Linkhart carefully removes the owls from their nest, and lowers them to the students waiting below.

Flammulated Owlet, about 20 days old.

The students then take blood samples,

weigh, and measure the owls and their wings,

band them,

and take detailed notes, carefully documenting all the information gathered.

The owls are treated with great care, and no harm comes to them. I was surprised at how calm and docile the mother owl was at being handled. When the study was completed, the owls were carefully returned to their nest.

From "The Friends of Red Rock Canyon" -
"On the Quarry Pass Trail in Red Rock Canyon Open Space, you can walk through the Kenmuir Quarry which was operated by the Greenlee family of Denver. This was the largest quarry in Red Rock Canyon. Kenmuir stone was an expensive building stone because of its color and because it was easily carved. And, since Denver had many more wealthy residents than Colorado Springs during during the years 1888 to 1893 when much of the stone was quarried, there was more Red Rock Canyon stone used in Denver buildings than in Colorado Springs buildings. Some of Denver’s most striking buildings built from 1888 to 1893 incorporate stone from Red Rock Canyon."
I had the opportunity to hike in Red Rock Canyon the other day, and had no idea this quarry even existed, much less that I would stumble upon it in my hike! I was amazed at the size and scope of it, and came home to look it up, and learn more about it. I came across this historical photo, circa 1890, showing the quarry in it's heyday, and the steps I walked up to get to the heart of the quarry.

These are some of the photos I took while there, the same steps as those in the photo above:

Red Rock Canyon is located on Highway 24 and South Ridge Road, on the west side of Colorado Springs. This is a terrific hike - made even more interesting by the wealth of history here. There are several trails, many are easy, including the one to the quarry. Hiking, biking, equestrian, dog loops, and picnicking are all here for our enjoyment!

The Garden of the Gods was dedicated as a city park in 1909 by the children of Charles Elliot Perkins. Perkins was a friend of General Palmer, who founded Colorado Springs, and encouraged Perkins to purchase the land that is The Garden of the Gods. After his death, his family honored his request and gave the land to the City of Colorado Springs to be used as a park, on the condition that it would remain free forever to all visitors.
Many of these rock formations are over 300 million years old and have been sculpted throughout the years by erosion.
It is generally assumed that the Native Americans named the Garden of the Gods. However, not so! In August, 1859, two surveyors started out from Denver to begin the survey of the town of Colorado City. Coming upon the amazing red rock formations, "one of the men suggested that it would be a "capital place for a beer garden" when the country grew up. His companion exclaimed, "Beer Garden! Why it is a fit place for the Gods to assemble. We will call it the Garden of the Gods."
