Stoneham's Buzzing with an Adult Trivia Bee

What are you doing this Friday night? Why not come down and support the Stoneham Business and Community Educational Foundation with a night of fun and trivia. For years Stoneham has held a Adult Spelling Bee to raise funds, but this year the Robin Hood School with be abuzz with trivia instead. You might remember that the ERA Andrew Team - The Shmitten-Bees made it to the semi-finals last year in the spelling bee and we had a blast! (Check out the photo show where you can see me biting my lip waiting to see if we spelled out last word correctly - we didn’t.) Last year the event raised over $5,600 for Stoneham schools.

The Trivia Bee is this Friday, April 3rd starting at 7:00 PM in the Robin Hood School gymnasium. This year our team members are aged 23 to 85 so we’re hoping we have someone on our team who’ll be able to answer any of the trivia questions that come our way.

It’s a fun night that raises money used to help kids and the community, so please come and cheer us on

Spotlight on Malden, MA

Yes, there are nice places to live around Boston where you don’t need to eat macaroni and cheese each night because you’re New YMCA Malden, MAspending every dime you make on your house! Malden is 8 miles north of Boston. There are two MBTA stops in the city. The Oak Grove T stop is one end of the Orange Line (so you can find a seat in the morning) and is located on the border of Melrose. The Malden Center T stop is, well it’s in the center of the city itself. The recently built YMCA has a lap pool and separate therapy pool as well as lots of exercise programs for all ages.

In November, Business Week put Malden on their list of Best Places to Raise Your Kids 2009. Now before everyone jumps all over me, let me explain that the magazine was looking for the best affordable cities to raise kids. They picked one city in each state and were looking for cities with a population of at least 50,000 and median household incomes of between $40,000 to $100,000. The very short article on Malden, MA cited the city’s racial diversity and easy commute as some of the reasons why it was picked.

There were 45 single family houses sold in the last 6 months for $350,000 or less in Malden with at least 6 rooms, 3 bedrooms and 1.5 baths.

Read & Go Green

When was the last time you went to your local library? As a kid, one of my favorite trips was to the library. There were so many books to read, so many adventures to have! My first job in high school I was a page at the Medford Public Library. Then, somehow, my reading habits changed. Instead of going to the library, I was buying books online or downloading them and reading them on my Treo. But thankfully I have rediscovered the wonder of my local library!

The Medford Public Library is part of the Minuteman Library Network which means that you can go online and search through all of the books available at 35 public libraries and 6 college libraries. A few weeks ago a client of mine (thanks Jen!) recommended I read The Not So Big House. I went to the Medford Public Library online and put in a request for the book. In less than a week, I received an emaDark Tide Bookil letting me know the book was waiting for me. The Sudbury Public Library had shared the book with me! This is a wonderful book showing that bigger isn’t always better, especially when it comes to creating a home that feels like a sanctuary at the end of the day.

Right now Medford is holding its first Community Read project where people are encouraged to read and talk about a book. The city choose The Dark Tide by Stephen Puleo. I’ve just finished reading the book (I took it out at the library, of course!) and found it fascinating. I knew that there had been a molasses disaster in Boston, but that was about all that I knew. Stephen not only brought the people involved to life, he also did a very good job explaining the political and social issues going on both in the U.S. and Europe and how everything from the slave trade in the 1700’s to World War II contributed to the disaster.

Libraries have been green since the first official lending library was opened in 1598 in the U.K. Books are “recycled” and read by countless people. Go visit your local library so you can read and go green!

Wind Turbine at McGlynn Middle School

As you drive up Route 93 heading north from Boston, you’ll notice something new spinning in the wind - the McGlynn MiddleWind TurbineSchool in Medford, MA has a wind turbine! If you’ve been reading this blog, you already know that I’m a Prius-driving tree hugger (and proud of it) so you can imagine how excited I am about the wind turbine. I’m especially pleased at the choice of locations since it brings alternative energy models directly to students.

Sean O’Connor, a 6th grade teacher at the McGlynn (an all around great guy and client of mine!) was just featured on WBZ while teaching his students about wind power.

The wind turbine will supply about 10% of the school’s energy needs, saving the city of Medford approximately $25,000 a year.
