Market Comment

Mortgage bond prices had another volatile week pushing mortgage interest rates higher. US debt concerns played the biggest factor in rate swings as worries continued that countries would shift out of US dollar holdings. Russia indicated a willingness to move some reserves from US Treasuries to International Monetary Fund bonds. Retails sales rose 0.5% as expected but the positive figure reinforced the belief that the economy is turning. Oil prices continued to escalate hitting over $72/barrel. For the week interest rates rose by 1/4 of a discount point.

The consumer price index Wednesday will be the most important release this week. Strength in the other economic data will do little to help mortgage interest rates improve.

Consumer Price Index

The Consumer Price Index is widely accepted as the most important measure of inflation. The CPI is a measure of prices at the consumer level for a fixed basket of goods and services. The National Statistics Office and the Bureau of Agricultural Statistics of the Department of Agriculture collect price data for the computation of the CPI. Since it is an index number, it compares the level of prices to a base period. By comparing the level of the index at two different points in time, analysts can determine how much prices have risen in that period. Unlike other measures of inflation, which only factor domestically produced goods; the CPI takes into account imported goods as well. This is important due to the ever-increasing reliance of the US economy upon imported goods. Analysts primarily focus on the core rate of the CPI which factors out the more volatile food and energy prices.

High oil prices continue to weigh heavily upon the financial markets. The health of the economy remains uncertain. The Fed has itself in a precarious position of wanting to stoke the economy amid the real possibility of increased inflation.

Market participants expect the consumer price index to be critical heading into the Fed's meeting next week. Inflation friendly data may lead to improvements in mortgage interest rates. However, unexpected consumer price spikes may push interest rates higher in the short-term. A cautious approach to float/lock decisions is prudent.

Please see the information below about Flag Day and how it is honored in Garrett County. It made me think how lucky I am to be an American and live in a country where I have the freedom of choice. Garrett County continues to be an amazing place to live with really nice folks.

Flag On Mountain Maryland
Jun. 11, 2009

The fifth annual Flag on Mountain Maryland will be held at Wisp Resort on Flag Day, this Sunday, June 14. The indoor program will begin at 2 p.m. in the Lodge of Wisp.

"The planning committee has been working for months to host this meaningful tribute to our flag, our country, and our service men and women," said a spokesperson. "This year, special recognition is being given to the Vietnam era veterans."

Maj. Gen. (retired) Joseph Franklin will give the keynote speech. Patriotic music, a short video program, and the presentation of several awards will be included.

Special vocalist will be the Honorable Leonard Eiswert, Oakland. He will perform the national anthem and "America the Beautiful" in addition to leading the audience in "God Bless America."

A Vietnam veteran himself, Eiswert's military career spans from 1965 to 1972. He was an ROTC graduate and had obtained the rank of captain by the time he terminated, his military career.

He and his wife Kathy moved to Garrett County in 1977, where he partnered with Ralph Burnett to form the law firm of Burnett and Eiswert. Last October, Eiswert was appointed an associate judge of the District Court of Maryland for Garrett County, a position that was left vacated following the death Judge Burnett.

Eiswert and his wife are the parents of five children and eight grandchildren.

The Vietnam Veterans of America Chapter 172 will offer support in various ways during the Flag on Mountain Maryland celebration. Members will also sell some merchandise that is typically available at their gift shop in downtown Cumberland.

The Garrett County Marine Corps League and local Military Family Support Group will be collecting nonperishable food items, stationery, crossword and puzzle books, or financial contributions to send care packages to troops.

"In previous years, outdoor events have taken place at the Flag on Mountain Maryland," said the spokesperson. "While approved for a military flyover and a display of a helicopter this year, maneuvers and deployments have hampered efforts to find a unit to be present."

She added that the West Virginia National Guard may attend to display some of their equipment and trucks for the public to inspect up close.

Local motorcycle riders are encouraged to parade to McHenry and line the parking area to show their patriotic support, the spokesperson noted.

Weather permitting, volunteers will form a United States flag on the side of the Wisp ski slope.

Attendees may bring torn or tattered flags for collection by the Deer Park VFW. The organization will properly dispose of the flags in a ceremony that is open to the public on Saturday, June 27, beginning at 1 p.m. at the post.

Mountain Coaster at Deep Creek Lake is a blast!!

Come Visit the "New Deep Creek Lake

Deep Creek Lake is like a virtual amuzement park. One of our latest toys is the Mountain Coaster. The coaster is a blast and it has a break in case you want to slow down. Now I am not a fan of Roller Coasters. I think it goes back to my days living in Mission Beach, in San Diego. They had an old wooden coaster that was frightful and you always thought you were going to "die". But with all that fear, I would get right back on it, for another ride.

So, I decided not to use my breaks. My thinking was I would just get the ride over with. Well I screamed all the way down and said over and over, "I am never going to do this again". My daughter was waiting for me to finish and as I rounded the last leg of my adventure, I heard applause. There were about a dozen folks waiting and having heard my fear of Coasters from my daughter, they simply cheered me on and clapped. It was awesome.

Will I ever ride it again? To be continued................. In the meantime, if you want to take a ride with some other folks, go to my web site, http://www.deepcreeklake360.com/ Go to Summer or Winter Activities and Click on You Tube Videos.
