Deep Creek Lake Real Estate Market 3/1/09

03-01-09
Carol Wills

Our Deep Creek Lake real estate market is certainly a buyer's market. However, we do not have the amount foreclosures or short sales around the lake and mountain as many other areas do. I think that is because we are primarily a second home market and many of our sellers don't need to sell. They have the luxury of trying to get their asking price or waiting out the market.

With all that said there are still some excellent deals and with interest rates low, it is a great time to get into the Deep Creek Lake Real Estate Market. Sam and I have had several investors just this past month alone take advantage of some wonderful opportunities and buy some properties.

Why wait till the market gets great and then you have to compete for homes, for more money and for a higher interest rate.

If you are thinking about buying or selling, we welcome the opportunity to earn your business. We are never too busy to help you.

March is a Great Time for Snow Fun!

Join the Fun at the Annual Cardboard Box Derby!

There's so much to do this month in Garrett County. Still plenty of snow to ski and board, the tubing park continues to attract just about every age, and there are decisions to be made about whether to go ice fishing or fly fishing. Plus the shops at the lake and in downtown Oakland are bustling with winter sales getting ready for their spring lines.

One of the highlights of March is the 6th Annual Beachin' Weekend at Wisp Resort, March 21-22, 2009. Break out the swimsuit and flip-flops to really get in the spirit of things! In addition to music and games, one of our favorite events is the Cardboard Box Derby on the slopes of Bear Claw Snow Tubing Park on Saturday, March 21. This wacky cardboard box sled race benefits the Deep Creek Lion's Club blind skier program as well as other local programs. Go to our Community page at http://www.deepcreeklakemd.com/ for more information.

Register Now for Boating Courses

Deep Creek Lake is so much fun in the summer as well as the winter! Boating on the lake is an enjoyable experience for the whole family especially when you are comfortable with the Maryland boating safety laws. Maryland requires that all persons born on or after July 1, 1972, must have in their possession a certificate of boating safety education to operate a numbered or documented vessel (including personal watercraft) legally on Maryland's public waters. Those under 16 years of age may not operate a personal watercraft (PWC) under any conditions. The Maryland Natural Resources Police Safety Education Division suggests that boaters attend a Maryland basic boating class. There are several ways to obtain a certificate. Garrett College offers a one-day Maryland Basic Boating Course from 8:30 am to 5:00 pm on May 16, June 13 & 27, July 11, and August 1 & 22. The cost is $30 for Garrett County residents, $33 for other Maryland residents and $36 for other state residents. Maryland seniors over 60 are free. Preregistration is required by calling 301.387.3069. Basic courses may also be taken online at your leisure. The cost of the online course is $24.50, but only after you have passed the exam! Visit the Department of Natural Resources website at http://www.dnr.state.md.us/boating/safety/basiccourse.html. The Maryland Natural Resources Police Safety Education Division has also created the Maryland Basic Boating Equivalency Examination. The exam consists of 50 multiple-choice questions designed to measure comprehension in regard to information contained in the textbook. A score of 80% is required to pass the examination. Failure to pass the examination after two attempts will require a student to attend a Boating Safety Education class in order to obtain the Certificate of Boating Safety Education. Visit http://www.dnr.state.md.us/boating/safety/basicexam.html for more information.

Boaters may obtain a copy of the Boat Maryland textbook, the textbook used in all boating safety classes, by contacting (410) 643-8502. After studying the material contained in the textbook, please contact the appropriate person from the information below to schedule a date and time to take the exam.

Boating safety is everyone's responsibility!

BlackBerry As A Modem For Your Laptop, Carol Wills, Deep Creek Lake

02-28-09
Carol Wills

As I continue to embrace as much technology as I can, I found myself almost begging my husband Ted to share some technology secrets that I have not used. Since I am trying to loose weight and it is hard to find fresh flowers without spending a large amount of money, in Deep Creek Lake, I decided to forgo the usual Valentine's Day gifts and have Ted show me some "New, Newer, Stuff" on the technology front. Now grant you, it is not a new subject for me, as he tried to show me this months ago. I was simply ready to listen and without having at hand my wireless card, it was information I thought would come in handy.

His gift was showing me how to set up my BlackBerry as a Modem for my Laptop. Now I can assure you it is really slow but in a pinch and I mean a pinch, I would use it. He pulls out a 2 page instruction sheet and says here you go. Of course that simply was not going to work with me. So, he set it all up and it works great, But SLOW.

Instead of trying to explain how to go about all this, all you have to do is Google.

Have fun!

Kentuck Knob, another Frank Lloyd Wright Masterpiece, an easy drive from Deep Creek Lake

02-28-09
Carol Wills

As many of you know I have followed the work of Frank Lloyd Wright for many years. In my home I have several pieces of his furniture and accessories. It is about an hours' drive from my home at Deep Creek Lake.

There is another home close by, that is another Frank Lloyd Wright masterpiece. It of course is not the masterpiece of Fallingwater, but it is interesting and one of the last homes to be completed by Wright. Wright was 86 and was hard at work on the Guggenheim Museum in New York and some other major projects when he felt he could "shake it (Kentuck Knob) out of his sleeve at will" never even setting foot on the site, except for a short visit during the construction phase. The Hagans moved into the home in 1956 and spent thirty years there. Now you can enjoy and experience Kentuck Knob for yourself.
